Vary your speed, try to keep it below 4000 RPM's etc, etc. I think the owners manual addresses this maybe not.

Drive it hard. Rev the engine, push it.
When I worked at the local Porsche/Audi/VW dealership we could tell the difference between the cars that were driven hard on their break in period and those that were babied. You may not believe me, but some identical cars feel stronger than others, and I honestly think it's related to how you break your car in.
There were cars we drove that you could tell had always been shifted at 4000 rpm, driven soft, etc. It seemed that the engine would get 'tired' at 4000 rpm and not have much power after that. Other cars that were driven hard during the break-in period felt stronger all the way through the rpm band.
Anyone else ever experience something like this?
JohnS
Mostly I drove under 4K on break-in.
Now my car's behavior virtually begs me to shift no lower than 5K and keeps the power on to the top end (as I discovered at TH).
TAP Stage II might have something to do with this. The Turbo really kicks in at 4K with this setup.
In other words, absolutely no lag problem after a nice break-in here.
BTW - Nice breakin *does not* include lagging the engine below 2-1.5K. I've heard that this *will* dull the engine's performance.

First, on break in.....don't push it. Anyone who is an engineer or car tuner will tell you that.
After break in, push all you want but ONLY after the engine is warmed up. Once I get it warmed up I usually shift around 4500 on up. Quite honestly, I usually shift by taking it all the way up to just before the rev limiter kicks in.
I truly believe that being a more aggressive driver has made my car feel much quicker as opposed to other cars I've driven exactly like mine, that have been driven more conservatively. Others have noticed my car to be quicker as well. It's been clocked as much as a second faster than advertised times in 0-60 runs with no engine, exhaust, or even the air filter mods. (yet).
BTW, my car is a '96 2.8qm with 62K on it! No engine problems to date, driving it hard 75+ miles every day and at about 4 track events per year where I'm especially hard on it.
-Cathleen
