Wow, just got my Feb issue of European Car. There's a great article on GreedSpeed's A4 1.8T. Here's some hightlights:
-T3/T4 hybrid turbo built by Turbonetics with ceramic ball bearings. Compressor housing and back plate are from a Garret Air Research T4 tubo while the turbine section is from a T3 model with a stage 2 turbine. This hybrid unit is said to flow about 40 lb of air per minute which is good up to about 400 hp. (The stock KKK turbo is supposed to be good up to 220 hp).
-Custom tubular equal-length header/manifold made by a company that specializes in IndyCar fabrication. (it's really beautiful!!!)
-Turbonetics supplied high-flow external wastegate and Neuspeed billet blow-off valve.
-B&B Fabrication built the tri-flow cat-back exhaust.
-Vortech Super FMU (fuel management unit) which works in conjunction with the standard fuel pressure regulator to increase fuel pressure based on boost level.
-Neuspeed "Extreme" p-chip & high-performance fuel injectors. Neuspeed provided a lightened flywheel and performance clutch. GreedSpeed claims 300 hp with 14 psi boost and a larger intercooler.
Car was tested with a Vericom computer (stock intercooler and 12 psi boost) and measured an 80 hp increase over stock.
Article included a graph of hp and torque of a stock 1.8T and the GreedSpeed project car. "...the larger turbo hurt bottom end, but helped the top end tremendously. Despite the drop in low-rpm power, the powerband still feels quite progressive. While some turbocharged engines will start out flat and then suddenly spike, the GreedSpeed A4 simply makes more power the higher you rev it."
Those are the highlights, I suggest picking up the magazine and checking it out yourself.
Andy Hedin
'97 A4 1.8Tqms, Wett 1.0 Bar, ABT Filter, Tint
