View Full Version : How many here have driven an A6 or an A8? What are your thoughts? Curious George 12-14-1998, 04:06 PM
Hi, you didn't need to click to get here!!!!! stanj 12-14-1998, 04:28 PM I drove my dad's new A6q TDI-V6 for about 5000km this summer. His is with all the goodies, tip, and with cloth seats. I must say that I loved it for what it was: very big and incredibly comfortable for 4 people, still very nice for 5 on long trips. The love to detail is impressive - illuminated switches everywhere (sunroof, map lights, etc). I honestly could not thing of something I'd *want* and the car didn't have it, and that's strong coming from me. Despite its size it could easily be parked thanks to the tight turn radius.
The handling was very safe. I say safe and not exciting. I could run circles with my 30vQ around his A6, but I can barely fit 4 people, too. I got his car to oversteer once on a roundabout, but I was literally asking for it ("Gee, I *will* get the butt to break out... oooops!"). Other than this, like on tracks.
I drove about 600km thru Germany on the big flood night this past October. I mean the one night when they declared half Germany to be a disaster area. Even tho they had at times wind above 100mph and beatutiful downpours which I only dream about in CA, the car handled flawlessly. The Xenons were of course a big help and are pretty much the only and #1 grief that I have with my A4.
It is not a car for racing. But if you want to get from A to B very comfortably with the occasional fast turn (my family lives in the Swiss Alps), this is the car for you. Bottom line, if I had a family I'd buy the A6 Avant without hesitating for a single second.
Cheers,
- Stan
John G 12-14-1998, 06:37 PM I bought a 99 A6 Avant the end of October to replace my wife's 93 Grand Cherokee -- Brilliant Black with Vanilla leather (ambiente atmosphere.) Cold weather package, convenience package, 200W Bose with CD changer, 16 inch wineglass wheels with fat tires, and the enhanced security package (Xenon headlights and rear side airbags.) Quattro and Tip are standard.
I agree with stan's comments about comfort, ride, handling, and the Xenons. This is one very sweet, smooooth automobile. Light years ahead of the Jeep, with almost as much cargo volume (more floor area but not as much height) and Quattro to get you thru the snow (of course, without as much ground clearance.) We can carry our two dogs in the back, and the vertical retractable cargo net keeps them from climbing forward onto the leather.
Wonderful car to drive, with the only complaint being a bit underpowered for the weight. My 12V 2.8 A4 feels a lot more lively accelerating off the line. I've got the best of both worlds right now, with my A4 still being a blast to thrash around town in, but having the A6 Avant for long trips, cargo hauling, or carrying four adults in superb comfort and style.
John G
96 2.8 fwdM Pearl John 12-14-1998, 06:38 PM I own an A6. Wanted an A4 but no room for the kids. The car is fabulous ! Only needs more power ( you can never have enough horsepower ) . Terrific cruiser , you find yourself at extralegal speeds , but it's so quiet that it suprises you when you look at the speedo. Ordered mine , waited six months. probably the only A6 in the U.S. without a sunroof ! Exquisite interior: Ambiente Melange leather, cashmere gray mica exterior
JIM H. 12-14-1998, 06:42 PM Bruce W 12-15-1998, 02:28 AM There are at least two of us with no sun roof. Also ordered Cashmere Gray. No Quattro either. My boy racer days are in the past--this car has plenty of power for me, after my underpowered 86 Saab 900. Guess I'm in a real minority here. Love the car.
Bruce W.
'98 A6 Bose, 16" wheels
Mary 12-15-1998, 03:48 AM Agree with many of the comments below:
First off:
* Attractive car from interior to the exterior!
* Extremely comfortable ride, larger seats then the A4, thus better for the family!
* Needs a bit more power and low end torque, however for cruising on the freeway, VERY NICE!
* my Mom preferred the feel to the Mercedes E series (a true aficionado of cars!)
* Does not have the sportier feel of the A4
* Possibly without the Quattro it will feel a bit sportier
In summary, I do not know alot about the mechanics of a car, however I always go with my gut feeling...and it is nice! Feels good! I prefer my A4, however when I have a family I will aspire for a bit more powerful A6....??The future?
I test drove one with my Mom (however, she preferred the '99 BMW 328is!-maybe she would like the A4 that I have...)
Mary 12-15-1998, 03:49 AM Agree with many of the comments below:
Talk about it..... warren r 12-15-1998, 05:26 AM Had a 98 A4 1.8t, traded it for 98 A6. Yep, it is less "spirited" and the engine feels weaker because of the larger size and weigght of the 6, BUT, the car is much more sumptious, luxurious, comfortable, and does not have the rattles that the a4 has, does not fog up like the a4 does, and is MUCH more comfortable on longer drives due to the larger seats. I also think that is is much more refined. Tink 12-15-1998, 05:33 AM Had the chance to drive a used A-8 for a coupla days when a dealer friend who sells mostly used Jags and BMWs let me try the A-8 that he couldn't sell to save his life.
Besides price and lack of serious marketing by Audi in the US, the A-8 suffers from being TOO good of a car. The transmission is smooth so you don't feel the jerks between shifts that many consumers confuse for aggressive transmission programming. It's roomy, quiet, and handles well.
If I had the bucks now, I'd definitely buy one as I understand that the dealers are making MAJOR price concessions on these.
Fortunately, as Audi is doing so well with the A-4s and 6s, it's unlikely that they'll bail completely on the A-8 so if I ever win the lotto....
Tink
'97 A-4 1.8tq
Brilliant Yellow Tony 12-15-1998, 10:02 AM I test drove an A8 I loved it. It felt Agile, like a Grown up A4. not like what I read in the automotive magazines. Automobile magazines (Especially Car&Driver) are beginning to lose their credibility. The A8 was Quick, Faster than a 2.8 30 valve. I don't think it's quicker than a Chipped 1.8T. Anyway, The interior is beautiful, I felt really pampered. The rear seats passengers have their AC/Heat Vents. The car was so good I began to calculate the monthly payments into my budget, Darn I can't afford it just yet. I love my A4. But The A4 is only a taste of what Audi has to offer. I'm ready for a bit more luxury. To Bad the A6 is such a Hog. |
