the cost of the engines is a VERY big factor. Besides Ferrari engines would have been most likely customer engines and not current specs. I've not been to the MB facility but I can say that having been to the Ferrari factory several times and watching the engines being built for the Ferrari F1 cars and what's involved...it equates to much dollars for sure.

Both engines are typically hand made units and the materials used are most likely very similar if not the same.

A lot of the components come from the same manufacturers (Mahle comes to mind).

In any case it was perhaps like you said; a case of how to integrate the motor in the chassis and perhaps a much better deal from MB.
