I know I may well be crazy for even considering autox-ing an '87 4kq...but I'm new to it and don't care to be competitive in the upper ranks...

Xpost here...

If you are running locally, in general almost any H Stock car can beat any other with better driving.

As soon as you move to DSP, you will usually compete against more experienced drivers. BTW, the only update/backdate you can do in DSP is within the 4K model. It appears on its own line.

You might consider running in a street tire class if your region offers it.

I suggest that you run in stock class for a little while. That way you can find out whether you really enjoy it. It will also be much easier to focus on your driving if you are not allowed to mod the car. You can assess the local drivers/cars better as well. It will give you time to decide in what class you want to end up.

This is the DSP line for Audi:
DSP Audi 4000 Quattro 80 Quattro A4 1.8T
DSP Coupe

And the rules say:

"C. Equipment and/or specifications may be exchanged between different years and models of a vehicle if:

(a) the item is standard on the year/model from which it was taken,
(b) the years/models are listed on the same line of Appendix A (Street Prepared Classes).
The updated/backdated part or the part to which it is to be attached may not be altered, modified, machined or otherwise changed to facilitate the updating/backdating allowance. The updating and/or backdating of engines, transmissions or transaxles must be done as a unit; component parts of these units may not be interchanged. Cars not listed in the Street Prepared sections of Appendix A may not be updated/backdated until approved by the SEB and published in SportsCar magazine."

Check it out here:

If you sort by class, you can see that in DSP the Audi line is as shown above.

Here is the link to the rest of the transcribed (unofficial) rules:

Why not go with a turbo version of the 10 or 20 valve? That motor can be built to provide some serious power, and with the 4000's light weight it can be a real contender. Forgive me if i don't know the nuances of which engines were in which cars on the earlier stuff, i've been a 1.8t guy for a while :) Do the rules specifically prohibit turbocharging your car in dsp? i believe sm would allow it, if dsp didn't. a 4000tq with suspension and 300+ hp would compete in my area in SM without a problem. unless you plan on winning nationals, it would be a great car. check out 2bennet.com for some tuning ideas, they aren't cheap, and the website sucks and they prefer road racing, but they have built some unbelievable 10 and 20 valve motors. they had a 4000 that they used for hill climbs and road racing that was crazy fast.

All that said, i would agree with Jerry. run h stock for a year, preferrably in a street tire class, to get some experience. if you try to drive a hopped up car it'll end up driving you. stock classes are a lot of fun. and yes, it would be fun to drive your a4 in gs as well. drive em both, and notice the diffferences.

anyway, have fun :)

And probably would have to be in SM for sure..

I'm not so worried about learning the autocross ropes in stock class yada yada. I understand the logic, but I also just want a fast as hell fun car, that happens to be a blast at autocrosses and track events as well...

If I wanted to be a hardcore autocrosser I'd buy an old civic and go from there. Hell, the '89 civic that won nationals last year or the year before was sold complete with spares for like, $3k. Hard to beat that.
I'm more eccentric, I just want to have fun. I'd much rather have a turbo charged beast, whether or not I can drive it well at autox isn't as important.

Now that you bring that up, it makes more sense financially, to spend money on a fun turbo swap rather than an adequate N/A 5-cyl swap - with 130hp.

I still wonder if Torsen can be retrofitted to a 4k quattro.

In my rulebook it reads:
Street Prepared Class D
...
Audi
4000 Quattro
80 Quattro
Coupe

In other words, the Audi 4000q is on a different line than the 80q or Coupe. I don't even see the A4 listed specifically in SP, so it would fall under the CSP catchall of:

Audi
Quattro (NOC)

Note that it would allow you to run a 4000 turbo engine if one was available in the U.S. from the factory.

Now if the listing actually was like this -
FSP
...
Volkswagen
...
Rabbit & Jetta (8V, `75-'84) (A-1 chassis)

then you could run any A1 Rabbit or Jetta engine in any A1 Rabbit or Jetta (we have a local running a Jetta turbo-diesel engine in his Rabbit who comes out and smokes up the place occasionally).

The Moutons site is a handy reference, but it is not official, and may contain errors. My information is out of the 2004 Solo II Rulebook.

I just want to have fun with this old Audi as a street car...
I was hoping that there was a class that would allow for such a thing, and still be fun and relatively competitive on a local level. Maybe I should just go for 300hp turbo power, torsen quattro, and the minimum weight of 2600lbs in SM...

Otherwise, this 4kcsq will be a dog for autox. I know it's about driver skill and the car's handling. But I still want something that is crazy fun autox or otherwise.
