Brief: Rough idle, and shudder with acceleration or going up a hill. A day later the MIL comes on. I drive the car maybe 5 more miles over the four day waiting period to get it to the dealer. Today, I take it to the dealer and the MIL starts to flash for about 30 seconds, then goes back to solid.
Today: They replaced the injector in the #2 cylinder, as a failed injector. So then I searched the archives on this issue:
1. I'm only using high octane (91 is the highest we have in Colorado), from Conoco or Amoco. In California last year I used Chevron and Texaco a few times. Nothing other than that.
2. I have used Techron additive prior to my two oil changes (using full tank of Techron added fuel, plus at least partial of another tank before giving it to dealer). So this is once every 7,500 miles.
3. The day the roughness started, it was 15 degrees in my garage that morning (snow day in Denver last Thursday). Cold weather was also mentioned in the archives.
So, it's not a cheap gas issue, or not having decent cleaners (dealer rep I spoke to only uses Conoco fuel -shrug-). The thing is, ALL of our fuel in Colorado has 10% Ethanol in it. There are very, very few that have MTBE instead of 10% Ethanol, and I haven't seen one in over a year. Plus, fuel economy goes DOWN so I'm burning MORE fuel with this 10% Ethanol winter only fuel crap, that's supposed to reduce emissions (yet uses MORE fuel - how quaint).
So I don't know why this happened at 19121 miles. An injector isn't a cheap part.

Chris Murphy
1998 A4 2.8QM Pearl

Chris,
Since your car is a 1998 model, isn't it still
covered the manufacturer's warranty? So even if
you had to have the injectors replaced it should
not cost you anything. I should know I already
had my injectors replaced on my six month old 1.8t
back in March of this year.
The problem will be AFTER the warranty expires.
Adam T.
97 1.8t Q/S with Hoppen on board
