Hi,
I would like to buy a 99 A4 1.8TQM in a few weeks time in Vancouver, Canada. I need quattro, sport, sunroof and trip computer and maybe Bose
as well. I would like to know what is the best price I can get. The MSRP is about Cdn $38500.
Please note that here in Canada we don't get access to the invoice price unlike the States. So the % above invoice would be meaningless to me.
Thanks in advance!
Jason

Jason, I bought a 1998.75 1.8TQMS with BOSE, Convenience (sunroof & keyless), and the Silver Paint about a month ago. I'm not sure how much the prices have changed, but after everything was said and done, I had bargained the dealer down about $4000 Cdn. I ended up driving the car off the lot for about $42,500 (including something like $1220 for shipping, licensing and PDI) and that's after 15% tax (yes, I have to pay both PST and GST here in Ontario).
So I think it breaks down like this for me:
MSRP (approx):
Base: 32700
Sport: 1000
Bose: 1620
Sunroof & Keyless: 1450
Freight + PDI +admin etc: 1220
Quattro: 2750
Silver Paint: 600
Sub TOTAL: 41340
TAX (15%): 6201
TOTAL: $47541
I Paid about $42500 AFTER tax. So 42500/1.15 = $37000, so the difference is about $4340 in savings from $41340. I believe the dealer made like $1300 max on my sale. So that's like 13.5% markup, where I got him to give me like 10% off. Again, these numbers are approximate and they are for 1998. Hope this helps.
Oh just remembered, there is a place that you can call, and for $25 you can get an invoice price of any car sold in canada. I'll try to find out for you (too bad I didn't know about it earlier).
-Ash 98.75 Silver 1.8TQMS (now I'm broke as you can tell)

Where do you plan on buying your car?
It seems like most everyone buys from Patrick Ng at Richmond Audi. I'm not sure what kind of deals he makes but some of the A4 Club of Vancouver members could tell you. (You do know about the club, I hope. If you aren't already a member you should join. Doesn't cost anything and you'll have access to over 30 fellow Vancouver A4 owners.)
I bought my car from Guildford Motors. Didn't get a particularly good deal but I'm not very good at bargaining.
Have you considered getting a 98? You might get a better deal.
Peter
98 Brilliant Yellow/Onyx Leatherette

what dealer was this? How was the negotiating process? How long was it? I was unable to shave off more than 1000 off the MSRP with anyone.
Gus
98.5 2.8q 2nd hand

Thanks Ash!
I think you got a good deal. I was at the dealer a few days ago and I was quoted $36000 for a black 98 (same options as yours but without the Bose) down from $38710. And was quoted a similarly equipped 99 (with metallic paint) for $37000.
I wasn't serious enouth that day so I think I should get a better deal when I'm prepared to buy.
Thanks!

I went to Richmond Audi a few days ago and chatted with their assistant manager (not Patrick).
I also went to Capilano VW/Audi which is owned by Guildford according to their sales rep a few months ago. But they don't discount much.
As for the 98, unless I can get a very good deal I don't think I'll consider it. The volcano black (N/A in 98) is awesome!

I got my car from Richmond Audi (Patrick Ng) in Summer of 97 when the dealer first opened. The dealer gave me a very good price with some unexpected bonuses (maybe its because its the new dealer at that time). I took my 97 A4 1.8T with the following options:
Sports Package
Moonroof
Metallic paint (Aluminum silver)
Ski Sack
Quattro
Price before negoitation: $37500
The dealer gave me free ski sack and moonroof (more than 1K in options) at the end of the negoitation. With my trade-in 92 BMW 318 for 16K. I took delivery of my car out of door at $21500 before tax and insurance. On the other hand, I didn't get ripped off by the dealer like undercoating or extended warranty. I think my deal is pretty good because at that time, the other two dealers in Greater Vancouver don't even gave me 1 cent off MSRP.
Tom
97 A4 1.8TQM

Gus,
I live in Brampton (just outside of Toronto), my dealer was Bramgate VW/Audi in Brampton. Fortunately for me, the first salesperson that I spoke to was actually not a salesperson. The dealership has been family owned for 25 years, and I got lucky enough to talk to one of the owners (the original owner's son). So it's possible that this guy doesn't make commision since he's really not a salesman and hence was able to chop that out of the price. The negotiation process took quite long, about a month since I was first looking for a FWD (to save money!), but they couldn't get one. Overall though, I bargained pretty hard (I was still nice of course), and in the end he actually showed me some of the invoice prices...i.e. the BOSE option was like $1420 instead of $1650 etc etc. I remember seeing the base invoice being around $27,500 as opposed to MSRP of $32,700.
-Ash 98.75 Silver 1.8TQMS

Yes, I have quattro as well (that's what the "Q" in 1.8TQMS stands for). I'm actually glad I dished out the extra for the Quattro. A4 and Passat would come down to personal choice and needs I guess.
Good Luck.
-Ash 98.75 Silver 1.8TQMS
