I have a rattle that comes up every so often, and it drives me absolutely NUTS! It is coming from the following area.
To the left of the steering wheel, you have the heater/AC vent. On the dash, there's another vent (I have no idea what it is) right above it. The sound is coming from there, it definitely a vibrational thing, since it's sporadic. It's not a loose piece on the vents themselves (putting a bit of pressure on them or the dash, door panel, etc. doesn't make it go away).
If anyone has gotten this and has remedied the situation, please let me know, because it's too annoying to deal with.
Thanks

I had a rattle that I was convinced was coming from the same area you describe. Enough fiddling around with it, though, made me realize that it actually was coming from the steering column. The piece of plastic that houses the steering column is in two parts (split horizontally), and by squeezing the top housing I could get the rattle to stop.
That may not be what yours is, but I'd give it try. At least take it as evidence that your ears can be deceiving when trying to discern where little noises like that come from. That rattle STILL sounds like its coming from the vent to me, but touching the steering column fixes it every time.
Good luck.
Miles

I have oe that took me forever to localize and for a while thought it was from the steering column also but I have now found it to definitely be inside the steering wheel, if I pull lsightly towards myself on the airbag enclosure I can stop the rattle.
Chris

All I needed to do was remove the fuse cover and re-install it, the rattle was gone. No guarantee it's the same for you, but give it a try.
- Stan
In my case its the top housing of the steering
column. Took the car to the dealer who popped
it open and showed me a loose spring/clip. Part
is on order to be replaced.
Ajay
A friend of mine had the same "problem" (intermittant rattle coming from somewhere left of the steering wheel) last year and repeatedly went back to the dealer who could not re-create the rattle.... after several frustrating discussions with the service dept, a service technician finally agreed to ride shotgun to hear this phantom rattle.
After pulling out of the dealership, sure enough the rattle started and my buddy screamed with a victorious grin, "There! Hear it?!?"
The technician reached over, put his hand around the Tag Heuer that my friend wore loosely on his left wrist and, magically, the rattle stopped.... Oops.
Of course YOUR rattle is real - but I thought you might find this humorous.

Yup,
I had the very same thing! My Tag Heuer 2000 is a bit loose on my wrist and keeps making a rattling sound. However, I too still have this "phantom vent" rattle. Will have to check out the steering column.
Marcin R.
---
'98.5 A4 1.8Tqms

Chris,
My steering wheel was making a buzzing sound too. When I pulled back on the airbag cover, it would go away. Here's how I fixed it on my A4:
1) Remove center portion of steering wheel by removing the two Torx bolts located on the backside of the wheel.
2) The airbag will remain connected to the rest of the steering wheel via one wire. I did not remove the wire as I couldn't figure out how to unconnect it from the airbag (I was a bit nervous, as I didn't want to accidentally deploy the airbag in my face). This wire was wrapped in a plastic tube, so I didn't think it was the cause of my noise.
I placed a piece of thin foam on the round metal "washer"-looking thing on the bottom of the steering wheel (not the back of the airbag). It looks like this metal thing was coming into contact with the metal back of the airbag and causing my rattle. I also snugged down two other Torx bolts that were located in the steering wheel (not sure what they do).
When I put it all back together, no rattles or buzzes (and my horn still works).
Hope this helps.
Andy Hedin

I have the same thing with my Tag Heuer 2000 series also, I wear it slightly loosely so when I want to find my real rattle, I have to hold my writst.
Chris
