Is M95 approved for ALL SCCA classes? Thanks

don't have the fireproof/fire resistant lining. The SA helmets do. That is about it. I spoke to the Director of SNELL and he told me that many manufacturers sell the EXACT same helmet as M and SA rated. All they do is put in a fire resistant lining.

As far as what SCCA says, I am guessing it is SA only. But I am not sure.

SA Helmets have a thicker clear shield, too - keeps the rocks out of your nose
and eyes. On my SA helmets the shield is twice as thick as my bike helmets.

the guy I spoke to said the opposite. That the bikes had bigger shields, since they are always open, while most SA helmets are used in closed vehicles, so it isn't as important.

...but SA helmets are designed for the worst case in open and closed cars. Sit in a Formula Ford or a Vee or an Atlantic or a sports racer and imagine a big rock launched by the rear slicks of the clown in front of you, bouncing off your nose at 150 mph. Been there, and it kinda stings.

All my bike helmets have a thin visor, with no option for a thicker one. All my SA helmets have a really thick visor. It may have to do with rock protection, it may have to do with fire protection, it may be called for in the SFI spec.....don't know why they're thicker, just know that they are. It's probably not in the SA spec, if there is one, as you can buy open faced SA helmets. Most sanctioning bodies require that you use a full face helmet if you're in an open car.

This weekend I managed to hit my helmet (with my head in it) against the window net attachment in our rally car during a stage. It took a little chunk out of the helmet paint. I know you are supposed to get a helmet examined or replace it after an impact.

Since it is only a small chip, do I need to replace/get it examined?

Thanks!
Daphne

SA helmets are tested for roll bar impact and an SA helmet isn't required to have as wide a field of vision as an M rated helmet. (And yes, SA has fire retardent material on the inside.)

Other than that, they are the same.
Daphne

Or a star with fracture lines? A chip I ignore, the fracture I toss. A lot of paint/decal stuff is superficial. The concern is really if your head compressed the styro or if the shell won't hold the foam to your head.

Does your net rig have sharp edges on the rod/rigging? I would grind/bend anything that could come in contact with my flailing body. The last thing you want is a deep puncture/slash in the boonies.

What do you rally? SCCA, I presume? I miss my 323 gtx.

Actually, there are two chips, each about half the size of a number button on a Motorola StarTac phone. Doesn't look like a star pattern, but I really felt it when it hit.

The window net mounting isn't sharp (looks like the male? portion of a seat belt) and this happened when we hit a yump that threw my side of the car up pretty high. (Why does this always happen on the co-driver's side?)

I called the Shoei people and they said they would inspect the helmet for free. Given that it's my head, I think I'll send it in just to be safe. (We're not running any additional races this year, anyway...)

Yes, SCCA ProRally. We have a 1988 Toyota Celica AllTrac running in open class. (Our web site is here.)

Ah, the Mazda 323 GTX - a very nice car. I think there are a couple for sale these days...
Daphne
