View Full Version : Sheesh, I don't know if the 6point harness was a good idea.

Well, I put in a 6 point harness in my car with stock seats and no rollbar/harnessbar. I'm not too thrilled with how effective it's going to be.

First, I don't think I need to worry about snapping my neck in the event of a severe rollover. Even with the harness strapped tight, there's plenty of sideways play of my torso with the stock seats. If I had some race seats, then I'd worry about it.

Few things that I don't like about it:

1) the mounting hardware for the shoulder staps are bolted to the car at off angles.

2) The submarine belts can't pull down on the cam low enough. Without the sub-belt going straight down through a hole by the crotch, it doesn't do much. It allows the lap belts to sit above and away from the hip bones so that in the event of a head on impact, the lapbelt probably squish all my guts up and out my mouth or my arse. John/TSR, any tips on how to stuff it back down my throat?

So here's what I'm thinking of doing: I'm going to use both the harness and stock seatbelts or just use the seatbelts at track events. Definitely not the harness alone. I'll let my instructor decide which on setup we use. The only problem I see with using both is that I'll have to release both of them in the event I need to bail out of my car quickly.

I'm also not going to cinch down on the shoulder harness so that it doesn't lift up on my lap belt over my hips.

Hopefully, the stock seatbelts will provide good protection and the harness will supplement it.

Any comments or suggests are appreciated.
Andrew Lee

I think it would be good for you to position the lap part of the harness to it is right on your hips. Snug that down. Then, attach the submarine belt(s) so that they won't allow the hip belts to ride up (since there isn't a hole in the seat to place the "teste-crusher belt through!). Then, finally, cinch the shoulder belts.

That should be better. Using the stock belt AND the harness is just a problem waiting to happen. Murphy's law says you'll have an incident and will get trapped.

One day soon, someone is going to make a bolt-in, bolt-out harness brace that goes all the way across the rear and attaches to the upper seat belt spool mounts. Your harness belts need to go over that bar to prevent compression injuries. Some clubs won't even let you run harnesses without a properly angled brace. I'd sit tight, I'm sure some enterprising Audihead will have a brace on the market before long.

Andrew, it seems you need to shorten the sub belts. When I put my harness on, the sub belts crease the hell out of the seat, but they are tight - and they hold the lap belt down right where it should be. Unfortunately, I have to unbolt the front of the seat to adjust the subs - but only needed to do it once.

Also, my shoulder straps hold me in really tight - I usually tighten the shoulder straps last, then move the seat forward an inch or two - I cannot move in my seat when the harness is tight.

Anyway like Jon said, tighten lap belt, then sub belt, then shoulder straps.

My shoulder strap hardware is mounted at odd angles too.

That's the way I was strapping in, but the harder the sub belt was pulled, the further the cam was pulled away from me. I'll try to strap my lap belt even tighter first.

Thanks to all.
Andrew Lee
