Following a relatively succesful weekend with the race S4, Istook-Aines Motorsports suffered a dramatic loss last evening on the way back home to Dallas. The rig, which includes a Ford F70 toterhome and a 48-foot 3-car car trailer, fell prey to a locked rear trailer axle while traveling at 70 miles an hour. The locked axle caused the front-end of the towing vehicle to pitch so far skyward that the toterhome was nearly sitting on end. Even worse, this occured just before passing underneath an overpass. The toterhome was so far off the ground that it contacted the underside of the overpass, instantly ripping the top of the truck off and spreading debris all over the highway. Both Bob Aines and Don Istook, the only passengers on the rig, were tossed around the inside of the cab during the collision. Fortunately, neither was injured and both walked away from the accident. This is very surprising judging by the aftermath. Also fortunate is that the racecar sustained only minor damage. The accident occured on I-285 in Atlanta.
For those that do not know, Istook-Aines Motorsports Group (IAMG) has had their share of unfortunate incidents this season. Earlier in the year, their new raceshop was destroyed by a freak tornado. Only days later, their race S4 was totalled during a practice session while the car was being leased for a race.
This past weekend at VIR, the IAMG team did very well. After hour 3 of the 4 hour race, the IAMG car was in sixth place overall after being forced to start at the back of the field due to mechanical problems. Unfortunately, the brake pads on the car had to be replaced with 30 minutes remaining, preventing the car from placing in the top 5. APR is a main sponsor for the car. Several of our guys are in Atlanta, tending to the accident and making arrangements so that the car will be ready for the Speedvision Race on the 29th of this month at Road Atlanta.
We are all very thankful that no people were injured in the accident.
