I think I can get to a 2:14...maybe 2:13

But I recorded a race prepped Viper turning 2:07's on average, with a LOT of cars to pass.

Now that was fast...

If you care, serious handling Miata was turning 2:25's, S2000 turned a 2:23, with a whole lot of bouncing off the rev limiter, and abusing the ABS...

That was it for my group of friends, thanks for the lap time, you give me something to aspire to in my (will it ever arrive) S4...

I'm shooting for 2:10 on 7/28. Hopefully it's not too hot, so the car will make some power. ;-)

2:10 might be a dream, I'll settle for 2:11's or 12's.
Corey S

Ambient Air Temperature: 86-88 degrees (track temp??)
Gasoline: 92 Octane Chevron (4 gals of 100 octane at lunch)
Tire: pretty worn Kumho V700 VictoRacers

Mine was with passenger, about 160lbs.
Chevron 92, 3/4 fill tank
Ambient Air Temp ~= 88F
Tires, 2k 225 Dunlop SP 8000's, and I'm thinking I over-inlfated them.

Which reminds me, do you know if this is true:

Fill you tire cold, go out on the track, when you get back, measure them hot, if they are 4 psi above your cold temp, then you are perfect, if they are more, you over-inflated, less, you under-inflated. At least I think that's what I was told, but I may have botched it up...Any thoughts?

And Steve, was your lap stock S4 or with some/all of your impresive and growing list of upgrades?

On Sunday, there was enough high clouds to keep it at ~86 or so, you just might get your weather wish this next Friday...

You posted an excellent hot lap a while back, and I wanted to ask you some questions...

1.On T14, do you consider your line a late apex?
I had SERIOUS trouble with this turn, I'd push to soon (2 wheels off), apex to soon(2 wheels off), I know this turn is extremely important, since T15 is flat, and the longest straight is next. I tried hardest to improve this turn, and it never felt good, and I always had room to increase speed through T15(but that might always be the case).

Just looking for more of your opinion on it.

And be careful with T8 if you choose to go flat, the inside curbing has a nice wave in it that does interesting things to the suspension(my stock A4 sport) at over 80mph. Took it once flat in my car, and NEVER again will I do it(in that car), to scary, not worth the possible outcome.

Thanks...

Yes, on T14, I would consider my line a very late apex, you have to take off a lot of speed. In fact, follow the link below for a document about T'hill. You might have seen this already, you're going on 7/28 with Donutz Racing, right? Anyway, they had a link to this on their page. I agree with this guy's drawings pretty well, except for T9. T14 has an especially good diagram for the late apex though.

Yup, T8 has a high pucker factor. Very fast corner...
Corey S

Do any of you have one of those weed-killer spritzers that you fill w/ water to cool off your intercoolers?

Or should I just go to OSH and buy one? :)

Sharon and I have one. Not sure it's going to be of much value at the track (we bought it for autox), though. With about a half hour between sessions, the car ought to cool down reasonably well. Then again, I've never ran track with just 2 run groups, it's usually 3 or 4 (so, more rest time).

We'll try to fit it in the car anyway. You're welcome to use it as much as you want, especially since we can refill it there.
Corey S

You got four different ways to take Turn #8 at Thunderhill....here they are:

1) Those who brake and downshift for turn #8
2) Those who lightly brake for turn #8
3) Those who lift slightly for turn #8
4) Those who don't lift..and are wearing "depends"

I worked my way up to version #4 in my A4...but when I got the S4 and REALLY
got going thru turn #7...I have been slightly lifting for turn #8. In a chipped S4...you get going about 95 mph in the exit to turn #7.

Watch out for that nice whole that develops throughout the day right before the
berm on the apex of turn #8...the dirt gradually gets displace...and it can get honkin large.

... what's up with the signature? Thought you were 650/700...?

Just wondering, since Sharon mentioned there have been a few springs flying cross-country.

Jerry ran a 2:08 or 2:09 at Thunderhill in that car. Stock engine (208hp), GC coilovers (approx 500# with Konis), camber/caster, sways, etc. on RA1's.

Just goes to show that you don't need power to go fast.

Sharon was originally 650/700. I had 700/750's in my garage, but decided I wanted to go 700/800, so we put the 750's on the back of Sharon's car (just the other day). Confused yet?

Yup, she is at 650/750, and I'll soon be at 700/800 (hopefully before the 7/28 T'hill event). Yeehaw.
Corey S

I think the course was shorter or something...Todd Serota was haulin ass in his Yellow Cabriolet and he did not get anywhere near a 2:08 on the full 3.0 mile course. I think maybe the cutoff was used on turn #5. That should add about 3-5 seconds.

I know Jerry...I know his car....

He runs a 1:52-55 at Laguna. I saw him run 1 second off a club race M3 (J stock) at Buttonwillow on a 1:15 short course--this with his swaybars disconnected (mount broke).

Corey S
07-18-2000, 10:58 AM
Especially since HP helps a lot at Laguna. I ran some 1:53's at Laguna last November in my S4. Stock chip (250HP), coilovers, and Hoosiers. I'd love to go back with the list of mods I have now. Maybe I could get down to 1:46-48.
Corey S

I was working at corner at Buttonwillow and it was almost funny how fast Jerry was through Magic Mountain (we were running clockwise). He just doesn't slow down so power isn't that important.

He decided to keep the sixer and make it a club racer. He has already stripped the interior and is going to put a cage in. He has also bought a trailer. He is probably the only 635 you will ever see. He just figured if he is already that fast why spend money to get an E30 or 2002 club racer.

He picked up a wrecked M5 for under $4k and is putting a new rear clip on. That will be his street car. He thought about that extra 100hp in his 635i but he also thought about blowing up an $18k engine. The basic big six is much easier to find and cheaper.

Keep you eye out for that 635 at some club races.

In my M Coupe, I lift just a tad for turn 8 (no brakes), and notice I was going between 95-98 in that corner.

In my opinion, it's the most fun turn of THill

Mark Franklin got me going through turn 8 quicker and quicker and I finally did it a couple of times without lifting. Then, with Bryce as a passenger, I experienced a bit of a bobble. I went back to #3 on your scale after that.

This is all with a 1.8T and a questionable line in turn 6. I can't imagine an M Coupe or chipped S4 making turn 8 without lifting. Do y'all think it's possible?

. . . I would turn about a 2:10 on the full 3 mile course with no passenger. The reason I'm not sure is that I've never timed myself without a passenger, since it seems someone always wants a ride!

This is off the topic a bit but so many people have regrets when they sell old cars. Talk to ex- E30 M3 owners. I have decided to keep mine as long as possible, even if it gets replaced. If you get a car up to 200k or so it isn't worth much anyway. Why not just keep it?

Jerry's engine has over 200k and runs great. Another reason he is going with the 635 is the fact so many of those engines could be located in junkyards, etc. if he loses this one. A full rebuilt one would be less than $5k.
