What is it with all of the deaths in stock cars? They don't sound like they're anything I'd ever end up racing.<ul><li><a href="http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/motorsports/news/2000/07/07/irwin_crash/">Kenny Irwin killed</a></li></ul>

Winston Cup (and other NASCAR cars) are very overweight(3400lbs) with a really low tech tubular frame/roll cage. Anyone remember the days(1950-1960) when Indy cars were built like tanks? Everyone thought that strong and heavy meant the driver would be safer, but that is exactly opposite of what it should be. The car should crush or disintegrate to dispell the energy from the crash....

I don't think New Hampshire will or should host many more races at this point.
"These guys run those things 200 mph. It's circumstances with the way you stop that thing so quick. Your body just can't stand it."
Sad to say, but that's racing and they'll race this weekend and keep running.
Maybe new absorbing walls ahould be looked at.
I really don't think they have any business being anwhere near racing, but that would sure ruin it for the spectators. Maybe walls could be permitted along straightaways where a head-on collision is unlikely, but they don't need to be on corners or spin out zones beyond corners. You couldn't pay me to do 200MPH oval racing.

...should be the tool for energy absortion. I watched a special on Discovery a couple of years ago about this. A guy had designed a wall that was was a linked concrete system (like Jersey barriers bolted together). Behind each barrier is a hydraulic system (i think two cylinders per barrier). When a car hits, the barrier slides in as the hydraulic piston abosrbs the shock then slowly slides back out. The barriers move in something like two to three feet. The amount of energy aborbed by this system was unbelievable. They need to look into this stuff.
Remember the Busch crash at WatKins Glen this year. The driver (forget his name) hit at over 120mph STRAIGHT ON. Because they put those big ugly styrofoam blocks in front of the Armco, he got out, jumped on the roof and celebrated! That's the way it should be!
