View Full Version : One of my turbo hoses blew at Thunderhill...

Last Sunday at the TracQuest event I only managed to make one clean session as at some point during session two my car seemed to lose power. No acceleration though the car sounded fine. I stopped driving for the day but when I left the track I clearly had a boost pressure leak. When I got on the gas I could hear a "whooshing" noise coming from under the car that I could not hear when I was driving with my helmet.

I finally got a chance to check out the car this morning and found the following hose with a nice split in it. Cost to replace is about $100 delivered from my local dealer. :-( At least it is easy to replace.

Steve told me about it. That sure is one expensive hose!

Looks like there's a bunch of oil on it, right? All these rubber hoses in the intake path (post-turbo) seem susceptable to weakening due to contact with oil. At least my understanding is that oil will break down rubber pretty quickly. That's what happens with the S4 TBB's.
Corey S

I'm not sure where the oil may have come from. It looks like more than there really is. The part is coming from LA and should be here tomorrow morning.
Sean..

I want to get it fixed right now. It's easy to replace. I'll talk to the service guys about it tomorrow. Easier (and faster) for me to do it myself than have to make an appointment for service.
Sean..

Street Porterfields...on the track with someone who brakes decisively....do not even last ONE track day. Rod is proof of this.

Should I stock up on all hoses in addition to the spare TBB's for track days?

to not have oil. I don't think oil had anything to do with this split, the car is to new. It looks like a defective hose. The split seems to follow the mold seam. There are after market silicon hoses for the 1.8 that have been around quite awhile, less flex under boost, etc. There is also a cast aluminum elbow for this area that comes with MTM kits, I have one that I'm not using if your interested.

The oil did look like it was spraying out FROM the split in the hose. I found no other source of oil in the area.
Sean..

Just finished putting the replacement hose on the car. Everything is just fine now, thank you. I actually suspect that I might have had a smaller hole or tear in the hose for some time now as the car felt like it had less power but it was so subtle that I wasn't sure. The sustained boost on the track probably just blew it out to the point where it was totally noticeable. The car is once again kicking A$$.

My dealer agreed to cover the part under warranty but they really wanted me to bring the car in so THEY could install the hose. I'm sorry, but putting the hose on was not that big a deal. There was even discussion about TOWING my car in just so they could do it. Thankfully, common sense prevailed and they just gave me the part and I was on my way.
Sean..

I'm all worried about mine now. I tightened the clamps a couple weeks ago, but that won't help a tear. You know APR has those hard replacement hoses for the stage III kit. I wonder if they'd work on the K03?

Take care,
