View Full Version : Racing Thunderhill for the 2nd time inJuly, looking for any experiences, advice...Thanks... nogaro_s4 06-30-2000, 10:44 AM Corey S 06-30-2000, 10:47 AM
Corey S 00 Nogaro S4 nogaro_s4 06-30-2000, 10:54 AM I've driven the 7 turn, but not all 15. I'm wondering what the average speed at each turn, gear choice, chicane(sp) locations if any. Also, passing areas, parts of the track that make you nervous (besides turn 5), areas of caution (like turn 1 without a chicane(sp), off camber at high speed... Lap times if you have them. That sort of thing... Thanks Morgan Conrad 06-30-2000, 11:53 AM And on some he doesn't spin! :-)

Stan's Thill Videos

nogaro_s4 06-30-2000, 11:55 AM Rich L. 06-30-2000, 11:56 AM

http://www.thunderhill.com/tracklap.html</a

Corey S 06-30-2000, 01:28 PM Well, you must remember the first 6 turns, but I'll go through all of them anyway. I know most of the lines, and shift points, and I'd be guessing on some of the speeds (I don't look down at the gauges during the turns!!), so I won't use them. At the end of the front straight, downshift from 4th to 3rd, enter T1 with no trail braking (there are a few waves in the track before the apex). Use a mid-apex, get on the gas before the apex, accerlerate hard as you track out. I stay in 3rd gear from here all the way through T6 (you'll notice that you're right at redline entering T2). Turn in a little early, but gently, trail brake into the corner, and ease the car down to about mid-track (I usually go about another car width further in than that). Hold this position, while modulating the throttle, until you can see the apex. Squeeze down to the apex using the throttle to steer (rather than the steering wheel), when you know you can make it, get on the gas hard to track all the way out to the exit curbing. Once you've successfully completed T2, get the car back to mid-track before you crest the next little hill at the entrace of T3. Brake hard (not for long, though), and ease back off the brake as you crest the hill. Off the brakes, then turn in such that you are about 1 car width off the inside of the corner. When you can see the exit, squeeze all the way into the curbing. At about the end of the curbing, you need to make a fast (but smooth!) transition to attack T4. Dive down to the apex curbing hard, and get on the gas early. Don't track out all the way to the edge of the track, but use a good portion of it. Up the hill to T5, don't worry about downshifting to 2nd. Leave it in 3rd and concentrate on braking and turn-in. Timing your turn-in point is far more important than what gear your in. Brake hard, turn in early, and get all the way down to that apex curbing. I always try to hit it with about 2 inches of my inside tires. Chances are you have been taking that turn in 2nd (I used to), and you chirped your tires going over the hill, and blasted down the other side. Fun, but not smooth. Try the downshift, but compare it to leaving it in 3rd. Much smoother, more control of the car, and with this extra control, you can carry more speed through the corner (which is why you won't need 2nd). Come off the hull fast, and let the car drift out to about 2/3 track while scrubbing off speed for the turn in of T5a. Turn in early for T6, trail brake just a little, and get on the gas early. This will help you get more speed at the end of the T6,7,8 straight. Getting on the gas will force the car to track out to the curbing. This is good, except be careful about going 2 wheels off here, I bent a Fikse there. Blast through the T7 dogleg, grab 4th. Get to the edge of the track quickly to setup for a smooth entrance to T8. T8 is the fastest turn on the course (T1 is close), if your line is perfect and your suspension is setup correctly, you might be able to go flat through this corner. I haven't done this yet, but I hope to soon. Start by braking a little, and choose 3rd or 4th. Either work fine here. Turn in a little early, and put 2 wheels on the inside flat curbing. You need all the extra track you can get. Stay on the gas after the apex, and trudge up the hill. At the top of the hill, brake hard and downshift to 3rd. Use a mid- to early-apex, just touch the inside curbing. Unwind the wheel early, and let the car drift out to the right edge of the track early. You might see some flat curbing out there, and it'll seem like it's way too early. Once you get a feel for this blind corner (requires more faith than T5, IMO), apex earlier and earlier until your car tracks out to the end of that flat curbing. At the curbing, you'll be pointed toward the paddock, but while on full throttle, you'll need to turn a little more to the right to get onto the next straight. Hauling down the hill, grab 4th. At the end, brake hard, downshift to 3rd (go ahead and brake a little early, this is one of the worst spots to go off fast). Use a mid-apex, and if that seems ok, apex a little earlier. This turn is slightly downhill, and has very little camber. A fairly textbook turn, however. Track out to the edge, and accelerate to T11. You have to give it up at T11, brake hard and downshift to 2nd. LATE apex this corner, don't push through it and end up to close to the outside edge of the track. If you late apex, you can exit hard on the throttle and setup a straight line through the esses. Accelerate hard, grabbing gears, and mildly weaving through the esses. Entering the back straight well into 3rd gear, track out close to the wall, and you should shortly need 4th. Before going over the rise in the straight, make sure you're already over to the left edge of the track. T14 is another corner you have to give it up on. Brake hard, downshift to 3rd. Apex (I mean have your right side wheels right on that curbing) when your car is perpendicular to the straight you just came off of. You can't really get on the gas until just after the apex, quickly track out to the outside of the corner, and smoothly setup T15. You should be about to hold full throttle through T15, but if not, lift just a little before you turn in. The car will definitely track all the way out to the curbing. On the front straight again, grab 4th. Don't forget to wave to Turbo! (the pit lane worker) In January, I ran 2:16's (w/passenger) on street tires (225/40/18 S-02's), with Vortrag Coilovers and no other mods on my S4. I'll be back up there on July 28 to see what I can do with the extra mods I have. :-)
Corey S 00 Nogaro S4 nogaro_s4 06-30-2000, 02:05 PM Corey S 06-30-2000, 02:12 PM I lied, I had the Alcon brakes on the front, too!
Corey S 00 Nogaro S4 s4wood 06-30-2000, 06:06 PM

<img SRC="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/AudiWorldPics/2000/ss_s4sig1.jpg"

Steve S. 00 Nogaro S4 NorCal Audi Club http://www.norcalaudiclub.org nogaro_s4 07-05-2000, 10:00 AM |
