A question for you guys that actually go out and really push your cars. Are posters really going out and four wheel drifting their cars on the street? Understeer,Oversteer,Laying down the power in a turn; Can this be done at less than 30 mph over the speed limit. Wouldn't you have to be an excellent driver,if not great,to keep a drifting car in your lane? I like to drive fast, but is this reckless driving in the sense that it's just a roll of the dice as to whether when they lose it they'll hit somebody?
Bill

... though more probable at the track, and certainly safer.
There are a number of places where drift is possible, fun, and relatively safe. I-90 Westbound right after the Wisconsin border (and the last tollbooth) is the obvious choice if you're a Chicagoan. But there are other places around the country. Speed limit is 65, and you can drift at 80 behind a couple of the hills without too much trouble. So yes, it's doable.
Cameron

Yes, you certainly can. Places like on/off ramps. Depending on the traffic, I can do this locally at the Hwy 1/Hwy 17 interchange in Santa Cruz without being too "reckless".
I try to spin out only on the track :*)
Sharon

Ya it's possible to do it on the street, I learned most of my car control technique on the street by trial and error. And I am SOMEHOW still here to say that I'm lucky I didn't total a car, kill myself or someone else. I look back to my younger, stupid years and say "ya I was a better than most guys my age" but I also shudder to think how many close calls I eeked out of to "learn".
It was getting on the track that really made me open my eyes and realize that the stunts I pulled on the street were sooooooo stupid, and that only on the track was I able to really explore the car's and my own limits. Since I've been on the track and running Auto-X's I've really slowed down my daily driving. Not becoming a ultra-defensive wimpy driver, but I don't see the point in running the car hard just for a grin, when on a street I have to worry about kids, pets, wild animals, other idiots, that guardrail, or cops. The track is controlled, I can focus on my driving and not worry about all the other stuff I may encounter on the street. I want to drive fast as I can push myself and the car. One can't focus enough to do that on the street.
Enzo
Track driving and autoXin really opened my eyes as well...
IMHO (no flames please)...it is difficult to come close to your car's limits without (at least) risking bodily injury to your self or others....
Plus, it is sooooo much fun to drive on track!!!!!
Can't wait until my next driving school (car guys event at Charlotte motor speedway in feb)!!!! i just hope some other a4 drivers show up...ive never seen another a4 at an autoX or a track event :-(
David White
98 2.8qm
Anyone that is 4 wheel drifting a quattro with decent tires and dry pavement is pushing the car way too hard for the street, and is quite probably above their capabilities(drivers that know how to do it usually know that it doesn't belong on the street). The only time that I have done so was on the track (entered turn too hot), but it was a lot of fun :).
That said, I do run into understeer a lot. In a quattro understeer means that you entered a little too fast, or are pouring on the power too hard on the way out. That is why I like them so much, it tells you where the limit is without getting you in trouble. This is different from drifting.
I will 4 wheel drift every other turn in the snow, and sometimes I'll play in an open parking lot in the rain. In the snow, drifting is at least as much in control as anything else. In the rain I am leery of coming across a big puddle and hydroplaning into the curb so I rarely try to drift.
Go have fun on the track, it's worth it :-)
Todd W
