Any guesses on turning Tiptronic into a true lockup clutchless manual? I think this can be done, after taking the day off school to examine this problem. So far, I've concluded that a total of five switches are needed to build a Tiptronic input device, and that all of these switchpoints are magnetically activated on the A4.
The ideal setup would be a switch that could travel in a track and hit the switch inputs needed. However, I need ideas on how to save the last position somewhere so fifth to third doesn't end up in fourth. Here's the problem:
Imagine the gate looking like the 1970's Ferrari gates, except with the lever being an electronic switch. Five gears, reverse, and park (a slot would be needed for park because the basic ECU failsafes don't allow the key to be removed unless the Tiptronic input is in Park). The best situation would be this:
Park: pushbutton as one of the currently empty button positions on the dash. Park can only be engaged when the lever is central in the gate.
Neutral: between Third and Fourth.
First: Upper left
Second: Lower left
Third: Upper middle
Fourth: Lower middle
Fifth: Upper right
Reverse: Lower right w/ lever button req.
Park to Neutral requires dashbutton (off).
Neutral to gear requires lever button.
Neutral to reverse requires lever button.
Gear to reverse while moving still blocked.
Gear to park not allowed.
Neutral to park requires dashbutton (on).
Still working on this, wiring appears to be discontinuous between the centre base panel and the centre face panel. Also, the links to the Tip actuation from the dash button are not clear, though this would likely be an electromagnetic link to keep the magnetic system in place.
Just daydreaming about more modifications,
Cameron
