What snell rating do I need for driver's schools and the occasional autoX? I am looking for an inexpensive open faced helmet (snell 95), but does it matter whether it's a motorcycle helmet or not? There's some difference between SA / MA (?), but does it matter for driving schools?
Thanks,
Todd W

The more expensive (usually) helmets have a nomex flame retardant (resistant?) lining....and are usually intended for auto racing. The Bell Mag4 open face helmet comes in both M95 and SA95 for about $179 (from Racer Wholesale). Summit Racing also sells it for slightly cheaper.
They come in white and black.
The link to RacerWholesale is below.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

Racer Wholesale Website

Hey. got your message-
For this weekend, you'll need a Snell 95. I THINK you need SA as the MA is rated for motorbikes. As for finding one in Dallas... I really don't know.
I think you're asking the wrong people. The folks to ask are the ones who are putting on the event that you want to go to; ask the organizers. Depending on event and organizer's desires, I';ve seen everyting from a '95 "SA" mandatory to an '85 or newer requirement.
As far as "SA" vs. "M", from what my Porsche Club found out, the only real difference is that "SA" meets fireproof standard. Now, considering that we allow street clothes (non-synthetic fibers, whe have felt that "M" helmets are acceptable. With us it's SNELL '90 or newer "M" or "SA".
