I am still in the negotiation phase with wife...what day?...maybe I can come down
after that days race for dinner/drinks. It is about 2 hours away from my house. I might be able to convince Sharon Levy and Jack Thomas to make an appearance. Jack is in Monterey and Sharon is in the Santa Cruz area. The problem would be enbibing and then treking back home over 17 in the Santa Cruz Mtns. Ick!
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

I will be staying at some Hotel in San Juan Bautista - Chris made the arrangements. Trouble is, he really won't be staying there Saturday night, so I will need a ride to join you folks. Can someone pick me up and drop me off, please? And can you also make sure that I can get to meet Steve, Sharon, and Jack too? I PROMISE to behave, and will only tell ONE tall tale of my racing days! :)

So far it is just myself headed up on Saturday afternoon. I am staying at some hotel in Seaside just north of Monterey, and will be spectating on Sunday, followed by a spirited drive home down Hwy 1. I can hardly wait. I would love to meet up with anyone on Saturday evening to hang out and talk shop. If anyone knows of a nice place to eat, drink and huddle all night, I'm open. Any others coming from So Cal planning on heading up around the same time Saturday, let me know and perhaps we can caravan. Looking forward to hearing from anyone, as well as seeing you at the races.
Michael 98.5 1.8T QMS Neuspeed
I sure do want to meet a fellow AutoX'er! And we can talk shop with the rest of the group too! And it is not every day I get to do a road trip up there (or afford it), so I really want to meet the NorCal A4 Racing Contingent!

Hey Steve,
Thanks for noticing!! Yeah, hope you go to the race on the 25th. Its unlikely I can make the groups' dinner plan on the 24th. I was planning on watching only on that Sunday. (I have a 3-day pass, but I don't want to drive up twice and get all those bugs on my front bumper!!) Maybe you/we can setup a meeting place on Sunday during the race.
Man, too bad I keep missing all those lunch meetings you setup. The timing and location never seems to work out for me. I think I'll stop whining now.
P2
8200 miles and going....

Don't know if you can call what I do "racing". I just looked through Corey's Oakland pictures...and the slow times I posted :*( [I did better at Marina...really!]
I am now collecting pictures of me with only 3 wheels on the ground from the autocross races and thunderhill :*)
Sharon

I wouldn't count on too much spirited driving on a Sunday afternoon/evening on Route 1. I've got some other great routes if you're interested. Get yourself maps from AAA for the counties between Monterey and LA. Took the 2-lane route up to Laguna from LA in an Acura NSX - what a drive!

Believe it or not, the last two times I have made the trip have been some of my most memorable drives to date. I have always been worried about the traffic knowing it can be bad, but last year in particular was amazingly clean. After passing a number of slower cars, I must have gone 7-8 miles without so much as seeing another car. After about 30-40 minutes of driving solo, I see some tailights up in the distance. A few minutes later, I round the corner and to my suprise there is a Boxster in front of me, trying to push hard, but he obviously didn't know how to drive. Every turn I would have to slow down for him, only to lose him whenever it straightened out enough for him to get his confidence back.
Please, by all means let me know the route you took to Monterey. I have plenty of maps around here somewhere (AAA member for 14 years.)
Michael 98.5 1.8T QMS Neuspeed
PS. Want to see my new ride, look back on the forum page at the So Cal A4 club photo from Petersens Museum. Mine's the first one on the right, black with 18's.
When we went down to Santa Barbara/Camarillo this summer we took a short jaunt on Highway 25 (I think that was the number) from King City to Gilroy or vicinity....talk about two lane road with no cars....it was very fun. Check your maps...it is worth it.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
There are a couple of great routes from Monterey to LA that I have tried. If you exit the track at the main entrance off 68, take a right turn onto G20 (Laureles Grade). It takes you to G16 (Carmel Valley Road), where you make a left turn. This will take you all the way to the 101 at Greenfield (this one can surprise you). Then take 101 south to 198 east. Or, you can take 101 north out of Monterey to 156 (south?) towards Hollister. There, take 25 south all the way to 198. So, either way, we're at 198. From the 101, take 198 east to just past 25 (from 25, make a left), then take a right on Peach Tree Road which turns into Indian Valley Road. This takes you all the way to 46 (pay attention here!). Then take 46 east to Bitterwater Road (nearly 30 miles in), where you'll make a right (south). Follow Bitterwater all the way to 58. Make a left onto 58 and follow 58 east to the 5 south (at Buttonwillow). There is another great road that would bring you to the 5 at Gorman, but it was closed for construction the last time I tried it (I had to turn around!). Hope this helps. E-mail me w/ any questions. I saw several of the routes you mentioned on the map, and I believe they are calling my name. I have to run them by my navigator and rear passenger for the trip, two guys I work with, so we shall see. I'm guessing that you've made a few trips from up North to Buttonwillow before. At this point, I have to ask again, is anyone from LA going to Laguna Seca for the race on Saturday afternoon? Caravan anyone??
Michael
I've made lots of trips from LA to Buttonwillow (I live in Pasadena). Also, lots of trips to Laguna Seca, Sears Point, PIR, Firebird, Holtville and Las Vegas, although usually towing. I did Sears Point and back (800 miles) in 10 hours last Saturday. Did Laguna and back in 8 hours to see the CART race a couple weeks earlier. And did many of the roads I described to and from the Historics. Enjoy and be careful. I'll be heading up on Friday in a 97 Prelude V-TEC.
Scott
