There has been a lot of discussion recently about various headlight upgrades (SuperWhites, PlasmaBlue, H4 eurolamps, Xenon), all with the disclaimers that these are not legal for street use. Several people on this board insinuate that they and are cop magnets. I was wondering if this is just a myth, or if people actually do get pulled over and/or ticketed for this.
If you or anybody you know (please, no "friend of friends," thats how urban legends get started) has been pulled over for illegal headlights, what exactly were the consequences? Did he or she get a ticket?
I am waiting for the S4 Xenon lamps to become available, the illegality doesn't really bother me (I figure the odds for getting cited are slim to none). I was just wondering if it really happens.
Tom Halter
98.5 2.8 QM Pearl/Onyx
hopefully soon to be Xenon lights

Several of my Audi clients when I worked at the dealership got pulled over in their brand new A6s because of their headlights. It's the color they go by. Police in general are uninformed and because it's different than the norm, they assume it's illegal.
While the H7 SuperWhites are not DOT approved for headlight use, some of the bulbs have been (9004, 9006, etc) and actually come with decals that say so. Kind of like the CARB exemption plates that come with some aftermarket engine products.
The color is very white, so you won't get pulled over for having blue headlights like all those guys are putting in the hondas and mitusbishis.
JohnS

I don't know about headlights but in NYS you can be ticketed for running fog/road lights wirhin 300 yards of another vehicle( my father was pulled over for this)--and for good reason--this stops the "COOL" guys from running the J C Whitney projector add on's during the day and at night in town. Seems like all the GM drivers like to run the fogs all the time--i guess to attract attention to otherwise boring cars. properally aimed fogs are ok--but most are not
