i'm trying to figure the ideal psi for my new toyo fz4 tires. i'm getting conflicting messages between my car dealer and the tire shops. i currently have it at 32 and feels a bit funny. the tires seem to hum a bit when i go into curves. and the handling seems abrupt and not smooth.

my dealer says to stay between 30-33...it's the is300's ideal psi. they said this for my stock bridgestone potenzas (max is 51 psi i think) and for the toyo fz4s (max is 44).

the tire shop that mounted my new tires says i should have it higher than 32. like closer to 38 or 40. that's what toyo fz4s usually run...that's what they said.

this is a question specifically for my situation with the toyo fz4s...but i think the tire pressure question could be relevant to any set of tires.

thanks in advance.

Try playing around with the pressures. If you drive hard the higher pressures are good for cornering. Remember the higher pressures will cause the tire to buldge out in the center and hence wear more there, but if you are driving hard then the wear will be more even across the tire since you will be loading it more with the agressive use.

Just monitor the tire wear over time and adjust your pressures as you see fit.
BTW - I run 38-39 in my 225/45/17s and love it. I am not an agressive driver either

BTW - you did not say what size tire you are referring to using.

are you running 38-39 on toyo fz4s? or on a completely different tire? just curious.

i'm thinking of going up to 36 and see how that works. maybe up it to 38 or 40 if it still feels funny.

i have 215/45/17.

I have a 12 dollar pressure guage that I've been using. Any recommendations? I guess this is accurate to within 2 or 3 PSI.

They also make digital tire gauges (this one is sold by TireRack):
