I recently purchased a 98.5 A4 2.8 Q Tip. It came equipted with an option package identified as a New York/Conneticut emmisions package. <p>Does anyone know what this consists of? The car was actually purchased and has been in Texas for all its life. Only driven to NW once with the PO.<p>Thanks,<br>DS

I'm not sure about NY, but CA emissions doesn't require any equipment above the standard emissions control that comes with the US A4. I think the manufacturor just has to get their equipment certified by the state to put the respective emissions control "option" on the sticker. I think the requirements are: a catalytic converter (every A4 has one), a muffler (again) and be putting out less than a certain level ppm of pollutants. <p>For a long time, Texas was a state where you didn't even have to be running with a catalytic converter. If this is still true, I doubt that Audi would remove the cats for A4s to be sold in TX only and would probably sell any other states emissions control 'system' (standard equipment).<p>Just a guess.<p>

It is illegal to remove your cataclysmic converter in Texas. However, nobody checks anything here. A vehicle inspection goes something like this: they pull your car forward about 10 feet, put the brakes on, they put your parking brake on a check to see if your car rolls, they turn on all of your lights, honk your horn, and then they ask you if you want them to install new windsheild wipers (whether you need them or not). That's it. They don't check under the hood and they certainly don't do a sniff test. <p>So yes, Texas is modification heaven. We also have the good roads (and plenty of them) to take advantage of those mods. <p>Jimmy P.<br>Proud of being a Texan<br>Not proud of not owning an A4

The states of Mass.,Cal., and N.Y. require the manufacturer to designate that a car meets their more stringent emissions regs., but all U.S. Audis are mechanically identical. If a Mass.,Cal.,<br>or N.Y. dealer originally ordered your car, it carries that option code, but the code is meaningless. Conversely, a Mass.,Cal.,or N.Y. dealer can't sell a non designated car to a resident of their states.

When I was selling cars in Wilton CT. A law was passed in both NY and CT requiring the more stringent Cal. emmision equipment. I think this was 1994 or 95, it was removed in the next year in CT., dealers must order it as an option, but do not have to order it. If the car does not have it,that car can not be registered in a state that requires it. Dealers who sell on or close to the NY border order all thier cars with this option, or they can not register their NY customers. Dealers in the middle of the state generally will not order cause the do not sell many cars to NY customers and it cost around $100.00 as an option. This option does have more emmission equipment in the pkg. than the usuall stuff mentioned by other posts (like cats) but for the life of me I can not remember exactly what. I do know that when the laws were passed they were really pushing to get this nation wide. If you take a car without this pkg to Cal., you must get the equipment added, and pay to have it done in order to register that car with Cal plates.

They only have to order this option, in order to register the car in a state that requires this option. To be clear, a NY dealer can order all his cars without this production code(at least they couhld two years ago), so long as he wants to sell his cars only to CT residents and a CT dealer could order all his cars with this option, even though Ct does not require it. This of coarse makes no sense, what I did was order all our cars with it so I could register in both states. As far as the cars being Mechanically the same, I think this is not correct, but I'll call my friend who replaced me as sales manager at my old dealership and find out. Some things may have changed in the last two years since I ordered cars as a sales manager, but I'll find out.Two years ago this option was listed on the Monroney, it's odd that none of my current cars had this option listed on the window sticker even though both cars were bought on the CT, NY border.

My Subaru, that was purchased at Colonial Subaru in Danbury, CT. DOES have the Calif. Emission control listed on the window sticker, it is refered to also as "feedback fuel system". My Audi 97 A4 1.8T, purchased at Pray in Greenwich CT., does not have it listed at all. This leads me to assume, that dealers still have the option to order it or not or the Danbury dealer would not have been able to specify an option required in another state for DMV,like NY Calif emission standard. This leaves only one other question, do all Audi's have the "feedback fuel system"? If they do then most likely they are all mechanically the same, if not then this is the difference, and what several of my customers had to have put in when they moved to California.
