After a weekend at Pahrump, NV, and another at Second Creek Raceway in CO within a month, the stock SP8000Es are just about gone and it's time to upgrade! Since I have a dedicated winter setup on 15" steels, I'm looking at keeping my 16" sport-package wheels and going to 225/50s. They only have to last two more summers (it's a lease), so I'm looking for the most grip @ lowest cost (<$150) that's still logical to run on the (mostly dry) streets of Denver.
Some possibilities: BFG Comp T/A ZR, Dunlop D40 M2 (if I can find them), Falken FK05GR-B, Goodyear Eagle VR Gatorback, Pirelli P7000 Summer (if I can find them), Yokohama AVS Intermediate
What does everybody recommend?
-- David F.
98 A4 1.8T
87 325is

I just talked with my friend with the 93 S4, who was also at Second creek. Who was the A4 owner that damaged an R-28 at the track? Why were there only 5 A4s there? I heard the track was better for the A4s than anyone else.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM - the guy leaking gas on the track at Pahrump.

You mention $150 or less - I have the SO2-PP 225/50/16 on my stock 7-spokers and love them, other than the higher noise. At $180 I think a bit above what you said, but I would still consider them. Unbeatable on wet pavement, too.
- Stan
Stan --
Do you know how to get them for $180 or less? Even cheaper shipping charges would help. They sound like very good tires....
BTW, thanks for Jerry's email address. He's sending me the shift knob I wanted. (Yes, that's me too! I'm just a pain in the butt at the moment.)
-- David F.
1.8TqMS
87 325is

Steve --
Hey, Mr. S.! Hope none of your "precious bodily fluids" are leaking these days!
I don't exactly know how the guy with the dark red A4 blew his left front R-28 (I didn't see him do any agricultural work, y'know), but if I had to guess, I'd say the fact that the promised repaving had not occurred and the pavement transitions were kinda rough may have caused him to go off the edge or into the pothole in the center of turn 3 (rather than straddling it), or something. As sharp as his car was otherwise, I DID notice the R-28s on the right had sorely bent lips on them as well. Do you have problems keeping yours off the curbing and other obstacles? What width wheel/tire are you running?
Don't fret about the A4 contingent, Steve. On Sunday, there were only 5 A4s; Saturday there were at least twice that number, maybe as many as a dozen.
Fuzzy bunnies aside, I thought it was quite a nice track for A4s. It made me want to upgrade OEM tires, brakes, and ECU before the next event there! BTW, if anybody is interested in some pics, including of the supercharged Acura NSX at speed, I'll post them when I get home tonight.
-- David F.
1.8TqMS
87 325is
