Curious about recommendations for snow tires for a 1996 A4. I drive about 500 miles round trip from NYC to VT. Most of it is hwy so I am concerned about too soft of a tire (ie. the blizzaks(sp?)).
Any info about recommended weight, width, & type are appreciated.
Thanks

Just picked up my 195/65 15" from a VW dealer with Blizzak's NEW improved performance tire the MZ-02's. on Steel 98-99 VW Passat rims, go to a dealer and they probably have tons of knock off rims laying around like my dealer.
They look like they are going ot be a better dry road performance tire from the last ones.
Rims/Tires/Balenced for $450.
Good luck, lots of info in the previous forums about the pirellis but the botoom line with blizzaks is that they did have an older tread design but thats changed now.
eric

While I can't comment on the "snow" aspect of my Pirelli 210A's, I've done a fair bit of driving in dry and wet conditions. They are _superb_.
I went with stock size on the stock wheels, as I plan on going with 17" wheels/summer tires.
The Pirelli's handle better than the stock Goodyear RSA's, make somewhat more noise (not much) and are rougher - you'll notice this.
In wet, they stick like glue.
I spent four years in VT (school). Wish I'd had these tires then. Even in VT, you'll spend most of your time on dry roads.
While I was there, I got through some amazing weather, but ___slowly___ as I was on all season tires. I'd just love to try the same with these tires. I'd bet that the Middlebury Gap, a Force Of Nature with all seasons and in a Saab, would be more like a Force of Nothing in my A4 with Pirelli 210As.
I will test that hypothesis this winter.
--Greg
I posted the same question about 6 weeks ago. I live in NJ where the roads are usually clear, so I didn't want to compromise dry handling excessively. Eventually decided on a set of Dunlop WinterSport M2's from tire rack (with 15" steel wheels and covers, $500+). Would probably have gone with the Pirelli 210 Asymettrico if they had them in 195/65-15 size. Michelin Arctic/Alpins tempted a bit too. And TireRack always pushes Blizzaks.
Haven't put them on yet (weather is warm, as you know), so can't add any insight on how they handle and ride yet. Take this for what it's worth.
richardb
96 2.8 QM
