All:
I just purchased a set of Dunlop 205 60 15 Graspics. The
dealer suggested the larger size, rather than the 195 65 15
that came stock. He said that all snow tires have skinnier
footprints than all-season rubber but that the footprint of the
Graspics is particularly skinny, to the point I'd want
to go a size up (on my 99 Passat).
I'm of the school that skinnier is better in snow but went
with this suggestion anyway. Now I'm wondering if I did
the right thing. Any thoughts from those running
15 snows out there?
Tnx,
David
First, is 205/60-15 the right 15" upsize (I think so) ??
Any advice/experience vs 195/65-15 ??
They will be on a 1.8T quattro around Boston - very few days with deep snow.
Thanks !!
I followed my gut instnct and went with what I have had success with before. Had 195/65 snows on my Coupe Quattro when I went thru 12+ inches of unplowed snow in hilly Pittsburgh terrain (Haaka 10's). Can't ask for much better than that!
Maybe I'm pigheaded, but I tend to go by what experts tell me in literature before some "kid" sitting behind the counter at Sears or NTW.
Having run snow tires from October through the middle of April since 1980 here in Alaska I've had a chance to put a lot of miles on snow tires. Everyone I know and trust runs not only tires that are narrower than stock, but also slightly taller.
