I remember that there was a few laws that were purposed for the books a few years ago limiting 115dB's as the loudest you can have a horn on a passenger car. I am wondering if that got passed (I hope not). Also, if anybody knows where to find a horn that's 130+dB's I'd would greatly appreciate it. :-)
Albert Ur 1.8TQ

My understanding was 110db for any aftermarket noise maker, i.e. alarm sirens, air horns, etc.. I am pretty sure it was passed, because you basically can't find horns or sirens louder than that threshold these days. Something european perhaps is in order.
Michael
I think mercedes horns are 115 or greater? They are supposed to be at a dB which is most noticable or something like that?
Dmak

I'm ashamed to use the horn on my A4 - afraid the guy I'm blowing at may laugh. I am definitely going to search some junkyards for a '76 Granada horn. Maybe then I can wake-up a few morons around here.
California Motor Vehicle Code sez:
27000. (a) Every motor vehicle, when operated upon a highway, shall
be equipped with a horn in good working order and capable of
emitting sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not
less than 200 feet, but no horn shall emit an unreasonably loud or
harsh sound. An authorized emergency vehicle may be equipped with,
and use in conjunction with the siren on that vehicle, an air horn
which emits sounds that do not comply with the requirements of this
section.
So looks like it is not a set number...
I saw this "back on the farm" in high school. Crafty devils wired a 6V unit up to a K-car. The result was a loud, scary, metallic noise. Probably shortens the MTBF a bit, but think of it as a "chipped" horn.
What uses a 6V horn? Old VWs? Horns designed for use in series? Tractors?
BTW, Definitely run a fast-acting fuse inline when doing stuff like this...
AJL
98 Passat, wimpy horn
My Clifford air horns to supplement the alarm on the Celica I had in college were 130db, but eventually wore out. I met someone who had put a train horn in the bed of his pickup, and while I don't know if that was legal, I would bet it was in the 145-150db range--that's loud. Sometimes I really wish I had some of those; giving some jerk in the fast lane or the right-on-red is o.k. lane some sort of heart failure for failure to move would be kinda' neat.
