I know, I've read the archives and kept up with this story...this is just an addendum. My mirrors on my 98.5, build date 1/98, 2.8 30 V beautiful Santorin Blue were not working during the last cold spell in early November in NC when enough frost was on the car that I had to scrape to drive it off the airport parking lot. When I took my car in today for 6 month service I mentioned this, of course (actually I called it in a couple of weeks ago when I made the appointment). The dealer "generously" agreed to check it out. When they returned the car to me (I waited and did get an update while I waited) they had replaced the passenger side mirror and ordered a driver's side mirror. Aside from the obvious additional trip necessary to fix this, I am a little disappointed to find that the passenger side mirror is on all the time now. I was hoping it would work with the rear defroster. Oh well, partly right is better than not at all right I guess.
Now I have one cold and one hot mirror in 70-80 degree F temperature in a lingering Indian summer in December. When March comes, I am going to pull the fuse as someone suggested not long ago. Although I have the greatest respect for German engineering, having spent some time as one, I have to say this concept is seriously lacking in common sense. I suspect they burned out when the temperatures hit 100 degrees last summer.
My 2 cents.
Clair

Yep,
As someone also waiting for new mirror elements due to poor Audi design, it boggles my mind as well...makes about as much sense as the AC cutting out at low temps and my windows still fogging up. Sure would be nice to be able to turn that AC back on---and we won't even get into the lack of recirc abilities without that AC.
Hello Audi---can you say T-S-B ???????
Rich
'98 2.8Q sport, foggy on the inside, frozen mirrors on the outside..........

I think that the mirrors are designed to be on all the time -- not hooked up with the rear window defogger. This sort of makes sense since the conditions that fog your rear window are different from what might frost the outside mirrors.
Doug G
98.5 1.,8TQM
