I'm the proud owner of a 1998 A4 1.8T Quattro w/ manual transmission. I took delivery of it in June 1998 and absolutely love it. However, since driving it off the dealer's lot, I notice a very slight buzzing/rattling/knocking noise emanating from the dashboard or engine compartment everytime I accelerate. Once I reach the desired speed, the noise disappears. Could this be related to the turbo?
I would really appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks,
Rocco C.

Often "slight" rattling is caused by unsecured objects, e.g., coins, casette in ejected position, pens, etc.

the sunroof crank attached to the fuse panel cover. It is the source of an odd rattle in my car about every 2-3 months (also a '98).
HTH,
Steve

Steve:
I don't think it's the sunroof crank. The noise is more like an engine knock/ping, but a lot more faint and refined in tone. It is also very consistent. As recommended by Audi, I only use the highest octane unleaded gasoline available (92 or 93).
Thanks anyway for your input.
Rocco C.

Eric:
No, the noise is definitely not due to any loose objects like those that you mention. It's more like an engine knock/ping, but a lot more faint and refined in
tone. It is also very consistent. As recommended by Audi, I only use the highest octane unleaded gasoline available (92 or 93).
Thanks anyway for your input.
Rocco C.
