Maybe I'm just imagining (and justifying my $70 purchase), but I think I can detect a significant reduction in engine noise in the cabin. It seems to slightly muffle the periferal whine while allowing the "song" of the engine to play through.
But hey, even if it is mostly my imagination, it will at least help prevent any more bird crap from baking on the hood!
Anyone else installed and noticed a difference?
Wesley Walls
'98 1.8TMS

I'm not chipped (yet?), so I never really hear a lot of song from the turbo unless I really wind it out. I wish I could hear it better in stock form, irregardless of hood insulation!
To answer your question, I really haven't consciencely thought about listening for this one way or the other. My best guess though is that it probably does cut out the whistle to some extent. I'm sure the whistle is much more prevalent in a chipped car (not unlike my previous Talon Tsi). Hope this helped.
Wesley Walls
'98 1.8TMS

If you wanna hear your turbo ... hehe, I suggest you to get a blow off valve (if you got a stick a4...) since A4 runs at a fairly high turbo boost from stock (something like 10psi?), so, the BOV will give you a nice and loud PSSHHH sound ...
~Prelude SH
I have just put in an order to the dealer for the insulation and the 17 clips needed to install it. Did you do it yourself? If so, do you think a not so handy guy could do it? Thanks.

Due to the A4 running a MAF sensor, a BOV is NOT recommended, unless you run the outlet of the BOV back into the intake system, which would, of course, reduce what you hear...
But thanks for the idea.
Rich Quinlan
P.S. There is a good explanation of BOV's and other bypasses on Hoppen's page... www.hoppenmotorsport.com

Quinland

Installation of the insulation is VERY easy. All you have to know how to do is use a screwdriver. One interesting point though.....I noticed that they sent me only 16 inserts (you place these through the holes in insulation and into holes in hood, then screw each screw into them) and 16 screws. I don't understand b/c there are 17 holes on the insulation and hood. Oh well, I just picked what appeared to be the 16 best places to attach!
The whole thing took 5 minutes tops, including "cleaning" the bottom side of the hood before installation. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.
Wesley Walls
'98 1.8TMS

I simply ordered from the Audi dealer, and they shipped it direct to my house about a week and a half later. The parts and prices are as follows:
The clips:
17 @ $ 0.58 = $9.86
The insulation:
1 @ $67.85 = $67.85
Do I worry about heat in the summer? No...again, this was standard on all 2.8's and is now standard on '99 1.8T's as well.
Hope this helps.
Wesley Walls
'98 1.8TMS
