View Full Version : Raybestos brake pad squeal 1000x worse than OEM...

I had my Raybestos brake pads (from Brake Warehouse) installed by Audi last week and the brake squeal has turned into a dog-killing, VERY high-pitched squeal that lasts the entire time I use the brake. Granted the brake dust is gone, but the squeal has gone from a little squeek for 1/2 second at full-stop (OEM), to a very prolonged, very annoying squeal.
Is there a break-in brake pad period? Did the dealer install them incorrectly? Is there something I can put on the pad to get rid of this very annoying noise?
Thanks,
Danilo

Well, I was planning to get Raybestos pads to combat the brake dust problem, and hoping they'd also help with the squeal, but now I'm not so sure.
Are there any brake pads that help with *both* problems?
This is a portion of the Brake Warehouse advertisement on the Product Guide here at a4.org:
--- snip ---
Features include:
100% non-asbestos
Carbon enhanced semi-metallic
Professional grade material
Virtually eliminate brake dust
No brake squeal
Raybestos brakes are the official brakes of NASCAR and include a
brake-of-a-lifetime limited warranty as long as you own your car. Installing the pads will
take your dealer less than 1 hour.
As Jason Teller of A4.Org comments, "You'll see a dramatic decrease in brake dust. I
used to clean my wheels three of four times a week. Now I hardly see any dust at all
and I don't have annoying squeals either!"
--- snip ---
Yes, the brake dust is gone, but the damned brakes sound like a pig in heat every time I even touch the brake pedal. If that isn't annoying, then I don't know what is. I'm thinking about putting the OEM brake pads back on. I'd rather wash my wheels every 3 days than make my dog deaf while pulling in the drive way.
Danilo

There is a section in the FAQ about installing brake pads. He mentions some kind of glue like spray that holds the pads and prevents squealing.
Mark (98.5 2.8 QMS)

1. Chamfer the front and leading edges of the pads.
2. True the rotors and finish the surface with the appropriate break-in pattern.
3. Apply anti-squeal compound between the pads and the piston.
4. Most important.....20 contolled stops (with brake cooling in between) at about 35mph to stop very slowly to bed in the pads properly. One hard/panic stop with fresh pads usually will glaze the pads and rotors and cause squealing.
Most dealers don't perfrom the above....go to a top notch brake shop and have everything redone right. They can fix the glazing and apply the anti-squeal compound and get you back on the quiet road again.

Jason's brakes don't squeal. I think you may have had them improperly installed, or you have not bedded in the brakes properly. Go easy on them for a couple of days and if they still squeal, take them back to your installer and make sure they sprayed the anti squeal on the back of the pads.
NeilM

My brakes didn't squeal at the beginning and they don't squeal now. I'm not discounting your problem, but I have not heard this from other users. Everybody I have heard from has been happy. Sounds like either an install problem or maybe faulty pads? I don't know enough about brakes to give you more info except to say it sounds like an anomoly.
We stand behind our advertisers to the limited extent that we would pull their ad if we were getting repeated complaints.
Jason
