I'm going to search (eventually) for a '96 A42.8QM ... I don't care what it's got as long as there's a cloth interior, really. However, I'd really like the sport steering wheel (it's the same as the 99s, right?) and it would be a shame not to buy a car b/c it didn't have the right one. Comments?
Mark (I'm going to get an A4 someday and stop bothering you people) Collett

I can post pictures of the '96 SSW compared to the '98.5 SSW when I get home.
Basically, The '96 had faux rivets around the center hub, and the rim of the wheel felt thicker, more substantial, and with a slightly different grade of leather than the newer model. The '98.5- has golfball dimples on the center hub, a slightly thinner rim, and "sticker" cowhide.
The *look* very similar, given that they are both 3-spoke designs.
Rob O
I asked my dealer about this. Its possible but very very expensive (supposedly) something like $300 for the wheel itself plus $1200 for the airbag unit. BUT this was about 1 year ago and through the dealer. My friend suggested I look for salvaged parts ora used wheel. I pretty much gave up on this.

I'd like to get the SSW with the tip shifter on the steering wheel. Anyone know if it can be done?
