yeah ... well, i dunno, just curious. Cuz before, when i was like 10yrs old, I laugh at people with these souped up Civics. But I didn't learn my lesson until one day when I was sitting in my friend's Integra Type R ...
We saw this Civic hatchback with an exhuast and lowered (the usual stuff), we stopped at a red light. Light turns green, off we go. First gear, the ITR was even with the Civic. 2nd, I could see the Civic pulling away! 3rd, he's far ahead of the ITR. All we could see is his back bumper with the licence plate. I was like "what the hell? the ITR guy was shifting good and fast? and he still lost!?!" So, i decided to find out about this Civic ... I asked around and people told me his car got NOS, turbo, blah blah blah ... but then I finally got a chance...
I went to the shop (cuz i know the owner of the shop owns the car....since the plate is the company;'s name). I talked to the guy and he opened da hood. He got nothign much. Only an ARC chamber, spoon full exhuast, a few other bolt-ons and little stuff like thermostat. And other stuff includes Recaro seats and full coilover setup with Spoon rims (so light...). The car ran 14flat with a semi dead clutch ... I was shocked as hell. He beat a NSX with that ... and he told me don't even bother racing him unless I got like a supra or something ... at that time, i finally knew NA Civics are fast and handles pretty well ... and I stopped laughing at Civic hatchbacks ...
~Prelude SH
P.S. this is in Vancouver, Canada

Here in California you see a TON of them. I make it a habit of not racing anyone on the street. I have seen and heard of some of them with major gains in HP. The ones you got to question are the ones with the big exhaust and chopped springs, with an AUTOMATIC. I am all into performance lowering...and engine mods if they do something...not just look like they may do something. I really like the sleeper look. If I can somehow work out the purchase of a new S4...that baby is gonna be chipped and debadged to be the "ultimate sleeper".
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

Yes, there are some fast civics, and usually it's really hard to tell which ones are fast and which ones aren't. I have a couple civic stories. . .
1.) Super Import Drags (NorCal - Sears Point), Summer 97? I think. As with most import drags go, they set up the strip for 1/4 mile runs (duh!). Me and my friend were watching from the bridge-part of Sears Point, so we can see the cars run the whole 1/4 mile. In one lane was a red Supra TT, with the Greddy single turbo conversion kit, all the plumbing, huge BOV, monster single-turbo setup, etc. . . it was on display earlier beside the track, the owner was guessing it put out about 500-550bhp. In the other lane, a little white civic hatchback, nothing fancy, slicks on the front tires. Lights drop, the Supra's got the tires blazing, and the Civic's already a car length ahead!!! They run thru the quarter mile, the civic ended up with a 12-sec timeslip (which is darned fast) and the Supra was high-12's - traction problems, but nontheless, it was quite impressive to see.
2.) My friend got blown off by a lowered black Civic on highway 101 (West Bay of CA) coming back from a club a couple months ago - he was driving a BMW M6, and told me that the Civic took him "all the way past 140" - later he found out that all it was simply a hybrid (Civic with Integra GS-R engine) with a 75-shot NOS.
So there you go, fancy civics, and all that, the ones that are fast tend to be really fast. But what I was referring to were the ones with the Transformer-type "combat" kits, all dressed up, with nothing more then a big muffler...i'd use the term to desrcibe them, but i don't feel like responding to flames. Anyways, these R*** Rockets are just all show and no go, and that drives me nutz!!! That's all i wanted to say.
As my female friend puts it, "the cars at AMC 20 are ridiculous."
:)
Edmund Louie
98 A4Q 30V
