Can you really pre order? And picking a dealer to work with, how do you determine if he'll be able to get what you want without waiting? Any ideas? Nice hour long test drive totally sold me on the A7, but recent reviews and specs of s7 makes me wanna order one of those!

I think you can figure out whether you are working with a good dealer the way they treat you in he test drive etc...
From there, you need to ask them if they have a list... So far I don't think they can place orders in the order bank so it is essentially trusting them to keep a list of who, in order, has placed a deposit to order an s7 ($500 for example) and then once the order banks are open, they start filling orders. The issue is that each dealer, based on sales volume and other measures, will get a certain number of 'allocations' to place orders. On a vehicle like the s7, Audi will parcel them out sparingly. Each month they will release more allocations to their dealers. And the further down the preorder list they go. Depending on your dealer, they may only get one or two a month. So the sooner you are on the list the better.
Of course, you are reducing your negotiating power and you are placing a deposit in advance of seeing pricing from Audi much less negotiating a discount. But you'll be the first on your block with an S7.
That's it. I think it's an easier proposition for those of us who are repeat customers with dealers we trust to treat us fairly, vs a first time Audi purchaser who may not have dealer who they trust.
