View Full Version : Euro A4- what do they have that the US version doesnt Tony Tran 11-22-1998, 04:25 PM What are the major differences between the Euro and US A4's?
Can one get a Euro A4 without paying to much extra?
-Tony

Patrick 11-22-1998, 06:16 PM I'm not really sure about this. I am basing my answer to your posts from what I've seen in pics and my recent trip to Europe.
1. They dont seem to have a lot of Quattros around.
2. Most of the A4's I saw there were just 1.8's with no turbo and no Quattro.
3. They don't have headlight washers
4. They have clear corners, we dont
5. Their tail lamps look like our 98 tail lamps but corner lights light up amber
6. They have so much engine choices and we only have two.
7. They have the S4 and we dont
There are a lot more minor differences which I dnot care to write...
Patrick
97 1.8tqm
Wett, Ram air, etc... Josh 11-22-1998, 07:37 PM 1. In England and France, I saw mostly A4 1.6's, not even 1.8's. They look differently at cars there - less is more, and in England, 75% of cars are bought by companies in "fleets."
2. You most likely cannot get a European version; there really is no need. Nothing special other than amber-lit rear turn signals, clear front corners, and more engine choices. Unless you want a 1.6L version with 14" or 15" steel wheels with wheel covers...
-josh
2.8qms+Wett stanj 11-22-1998, 08:28 PM ...for Switzerland. As a preamble, please note that Switzerland probably is - short of the US - the most affluent market for Audi. Even compared to Germany, the cars come nicer equipped, and compared to say France the cars are simply loaded. For instance, unlike most European countries, Switzerland has only V6 versions of the A6.
When visiting Switzerland last month, I asked my local dealer to create an "offer" similar to my 98.5 30vQ, plus goodies. This is what he came up with - all prices in CHF ($1 = CHF 1.40):
A4 2.8 quattro CHF 50,680
standard features: ABS, sport suspension, alloy rims 15", el. mirrors, front fog lights, headlight washers, rear head rests, heated front seats, side bags, ski sack, power windows & locks, fullsize spare.
Extras:
Tiptronic 2,930
* ESP 1,600
Sunroof 1,400
Power driver seat 1,100
Leather 2,600
Sport steering wheel 620
* Rear window sun rollo 190
* Automatically dimming rear view mirror 225
Wood trim 630
Car alarm 620
* Park distance control 540
Bose system (w/o CD) 1,670
CD-Changer 630
* Satellite Navigation 3,250
* or Satellite Navigation w/ TV, VCR 7,000
Sport-package (same as in US) 2,110
Comfort-package (same as US) 2,840
Total options 22,985
Total car 73,665
This does not include metallic paint which is also extra.
So there are a few goodies that we don't get. On top of that, the left outside mirror is aspherical (I got that one), tail lights have amber turn signals (got these, too), the car doesn't beep at you except for "lights on" warning (I wish I had this!) and the spedometer is non-linear (large spacing up to 100km/h by 5km/h, then by 20km/h, is a pretty neat idea actually).
Also note that the 2.8 comes standard with the sport suspension, but not the "rest" of the sport package, such as steering wheel and rims.
Hope this helps,
- Stan Grant 11-22-1998, 09:19 PM Kirk 11-22-1998, 10:02 PM I am assuming that the "Rear window sun rollo" is a rear window rolling sunshade? If so, can this be ordered if a part number was available and if so, can it be fitted into an A4? Any chance you could get a part number for this item or get ahold of one like you did the taillights?
Kirk
99 A4 2.8Qtip which will have sunstroke in the desert next summer... stanj 11-22-1998, 10:47 PM Kirk,
sorry but I don't know... I may investigate but since I am in the US now it's kinda hard. The way I saw it in the A6 and A8, tho, it's a part of the rear deck and hence hard to install. But again, I may be wrong.
The tail lights are easy of course - two big blobs of plastic.
In our old (now retired) A100 we had an aftermarket rolling sunshade. It was pretty neat for back seat passengers, but a nightmare for the following traffic. Here you don't care because of all the SUVs where you can't see thru anyway, but we didn't get it for our new A6 since it is not effective for overall heat situation in the car, just shade on the back seats.
Cheers,
- Stan
CHRISTIAN 11-23-1998, 04:35 AM Let's see....
The UrQ 20V, S2, RS2, S6 Plus, 90 Avant, V8 Lang (longer version of V8), A3, S8, S4 biturbo.
Soon that list will include the S3 and the new S6. We just get the regular cars with crappy H rated tires!
Christian J. Long
Laurent 11-23-1998, 10:45 AM This is a long list of options... now what is
funny is that for rougly the same price or even
cheaper you can have an S4 already equiped with
all these options, moreover it will depreciate
much more slowly than an 2.8 full option and
it will provide much more fun for your bucks...
Ok you will have to wait 8 months more for the
S4 but think twice !
Greetings Laurent dmac 11-23-1998, 12:19 PM Ok, so I'm a gadget freak.
Can someone elaborate on this system?
Is it available in the U.S.?
Doug M.
98.5 2.8 dmac 11-23-1998, 12:21 PM Tomas Johansson 11-23-1998, 01:12 PM You must be kidding me! Where were you, in Pakistan???
1. There are more quattros here then you will ever see.
2. So we have more engines alternatives...
3. 99% of all Audis have headlight washers, 1% goes to the US!!!
4. What else?!?
5. Thats because our cars will always be one year ahead, at the least.
6. There you have it.
7. You didnt even get the RS2!!!??!!
Sorry boys, but you will always be one step behind.
Tomas of Sweden stanj 11-23-1998, 01:17 PM It is a part of the whole car, it doesn't mount anywhere. The display is shared with the trip computer I believe, the controls are in the center console (along with a/c etc). Has a cute little antenna in the back.
While it would be able to give you the longitude/latitude info in the US, it would be useless otherwise: it's programmed for European use (maps), and that's it.
If you like toys, get the Garmin GPS-3. I have it, fits into the empty space where the old cup holders used to be, and has US road maps built in - $300 :-)
Cheers,
- Stan stanj 11-23-1998, 01:58 PM Headlight washers are mandatory, and quattro kinda makes sense. You are generalizing - compared to the size of Europe, Sweden is a small part.
In general, headlight washers and quattro is less frequent than in the US (where all new A4s have headlight washers, making it 100%, and that's kinda hard to beat, you see).
Quattro is more frequent in the US than in Switzerland, which already tells a lot. Not that we really need it in California :-)
- Stan |
