Hello all,
I'm new to this list (which isn't an excuse) but I am confused about seeing the random
"S4" reference. I am assuming the S4 is a hopped up A4 that will be brought to the states
soon? Only a guess.
Saving for my '99 A4 2.8Q...
Mark Collett

"S" designates Audi's bat-out-of-hell models. The S4 has been around since the late-'80s and was not based on the A4 platform, which came into being circa-1995. There is now an S4, S6 and S8, all hopped-up, high-performance versions of the A4, A6 and A8.
I'm not sure what the particular suspension/wheel/transmission diffs are between the A4 and S4, except to say that the S4 sports a twin-turbocharged 2.8-litre 30V V6, delivering ~260 bhp through a six-speed manual tranny to a quattro drivetrain.
In other words, the S4 is Audi's M3-killer.
Hope my explanation isn't TOO wrong, and helps.

That the previous S4, 1994 and before I believe, was available in the US. Wicked fast. The current S4 is NOT available in the US, YET. But should be shortly according to Audi (this model year or next).
Kirk
99 A4 2.8Qtip (If this thing was any faster, the State of Washington would be getting Direct Deposit from my checking account into the State Patrol ticket fund. I better stay away from the S4, although those wheels....)

The older S4...based on the Audi 100...weighs 3800lbs unladen, came stock with 20V 5-cylinder engine putting out 229 bhp. It was offered in 1993 and 1994...in 1995 it was renamed the S6. These are the only years the S models were offered in the US. Most owners of these older S4 and S6s have chips in them and usually put out over 300 bhp.
The new S4 is based on the current A4. The best guess of it data is:
1) 265 bhp stock
2) 2.7L bi-turbo 30V V6
3) xenon headlamps
4) sports package
5) 6 spd transmission
6) quattro - standard
7) 225/45/17 tires
8) 17X8" Avus Wheels
9) Two brake options
10) Optional interiors (including Alcanthra Blue/Leather mix)
And a few other things...In otherwords...definite competition for the current US M3 models.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

Also,
1) Were the S4/S6's turbo'd?
2) Did they increase hp 70hp+ strictly from the addition of a chip or were other mods required?
3) What transmissions were offered?
I know this should probably be in the non-A4 forum, but I'm just following the thread...sorry
But I haven't seen any 93/94 S4 Avants. I think they were only in Europe. They would be extremely rare, I would think. Not as rare as a Sports Quattro...but still pretty rare.
I don't know about what transmissions were offered....maybe you could find out more
on the http://www.audi-s-car.com webpage (Darin Nederhoff and Christian Long are
contributors to that one)
The gains from 229 upward were by conversions to RS2 turbos...larger wastegates...
larger intercoolers....and definitely more agressive chips. My friend in Colorado has
a 93 S4...and he is estimating his horsepower at about 310 bhp right now. Since it
is quattro he does not know the exact numbers.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

I've never seen or heard of an S4 wagon in this country.
I got a ride in an S6 wagon at the Brainerd, MN Quattro Club event in May, 1998. It had a 5-speed manual trans, as I think they all did, and the S6 interior (white gauges, etc.). It also had a chip upgrade and Scorpion exhaust with HUGE tailpipe. It was the coolest wagon I've ever seen. Unfortunately, we got a flat tire half-way around the ONE lap we did!
Rich D.
The I5 20V Turbo engine in the S4/S6 put out 227 hp (not 229), and there were TWO models released in 1995: Both identical, but later in the year, Audi sold them as 1995.5 rather than as 1996 cars. Audi did this becuase 1996 was the first year of OBD1, and they didn't want to go through all the trouble of making the S6 OBD1 compliant when it was a low volume car in it's last year of production. Canada did have a 1996 model S6, as they were not effected by OBD1.
So, beware that if you are buying a 1995.5 S6, you will be paying more since most people who own S6s, or are in the market for S6s, know that a 1995.5 is really a 1996.
Christian J. Yep,
As the others have said though they are rare. Although, were I live they are not. I am in Boulder, CO. There are 3 or 4 that I see daily and others that I see around Denver. I actually choose my A4 Avant over both the S6 and S6 Avant. My dealer had all three when I went in. I test drove them all. The S6 sedan was chipped and pushing 280 HP....WOW! The S6 Avant was stock, but was still excellent. But, I liked the overall package of the A4 Avant better. So, I ordered one and now I am the happiest guy in the world. I wouldn't trade my Avant for much of anything, and nothing that is available here in the US. Only the current S6 or S4 Avant would make me stray.
Just my 2 cents.
Rick
98.5 Avant QMS
