I took delivery of my Premium Plus a week ago or so and just noticed that the little touch pads for the advanced keyless start are on the drivers door handle. Question is, is the proximity unlocking function present on a 2012 Premium Plus but just disabled? Or is there some additional "hardware" that is added to the Prestige? I can recall that on my 2008 A6 the voice control system was in fact present just disabled, took a flash with a Vag-Com to enable it.

In general I dislike keyless start systems and fobs but would change my mind if I didn't have to take the fob out and press it just to unlock the car.

Any info. would be appreciated...

I am curious, but why do you dislike it?

I've order keyless entry on my A6 and it works just like all the others, put your hand around the handle and long as you have the key on your person the door unlocks, to lock it you simply press that small button on the handle.

What could be simpler.

Audi has two keyless start systems available. Mine (Premium Plus)requires you to unlock the door(s) with the fob, it does not have the proximity feature. The Prestige trim includes the "Advanced" keyless start with the "Convenience" remote. The Prestige trim level allows you to unlock and lock the door(s) with the fob in your pocket or briefcase.

My question was (still is) whether or not the capability to utilize the proximity system is present but just disabled in the Premium Plus trim lines? If it is present but disabled, has anyone been successful in enabling that function?

I have never seen the advantage of a keyless start system that requires you to use the fob to unlock the door. I mean you have to have the fob in your hand and press the unlock button, then when you get in the car what do you do with the fob if you don't have an ignition switch to put it in? What's the point? Is it really any easier to push a button than to twist a key?

Only the Prestige has the advanced keyless entry feature. I think the idea is to save money on the proximity sensors with the Premium Plus. I just don't see Audi having the sensors installed and not activating it.

They've been doing similar, as I mentioned, my 2008 A6 has voice recognition capability present, it's just disabled based on my option package level. All it takes to enable it are the proper Vag-Com parameters.

Keyless start not that big of a deal but nice to have. Keyless door locks is really the biggest advantage. Just walk up to the car and it opens. So car def has proximity sensors for the ignition to work, but for the doors, who knows. Only Audi.

If anyone has the service manuals, it should be possible to check where the sensors are, and then see if they are physically there in the premium trim units.

I doubt Audi would spend money on several of the sensors if they didnt get paid for it. Its not like voice recognition which is just software...

Agree 100%, have it on C6 now and I don't know how I ever lived without. It's one of my favorite features of the entire car.
