Thinking of making my way back to Audi after a few stint's on the BMW Camp, but with Gas prices not going south of $4 bucks here in IL what are the chances we will se an A7 Diesel in 2013-2014?

educated guesses?? since they already have the engine here in the Q7 what's the hold up?

I havent heard of any plans but when you factor in the premium they charge for diesels ($5000) coupled with the higher cost per gallon for fuel, I haven't been able to justify a diesel on paper unless planning to keep the car for 7-8yrs or longer. The better fuel economy just doesnt make sense unless you're in it for the (very)long haul.

The folks at Audi have claimed for some time that they are expanding diesel power across the product line (for USA). I guess we'll have to wait to see if it materializes.

The smaller diesel in the A7 gets an amazing 58mpg.

I wish someone would explain to me why this engine is not available in the US.

A few things you should know:

-the diesel A7 quattro is rated (by euro stds) as 54MPG hwy / 39 city / 47 combined
-euro "mpg" calculations are derived via different stds than US EPA standards and are highly inflated
-the same 3.0 TFSI A7 that is rated in the US as 19 city / 28hwy / 22 combined, is rated as 26 city / 42 hwy / 34 combined and we have the more "fuel efficient" 8spd vs 7spd, otherwise the US numbers would be even worse.

By the same formulas, the TDI would be rated approx: 28 city / 36 hwy / 30 combined.

So, lets run some *rough* numbers:
(and we'll assume premium and diesel are the same price though in some locations diesel is higher)

Gas: 12,000 miles @ 22mpg = 545gallons/yr x $4 = $2200/yr gas cost

Diesel: 12,000 miles @ 30mpg = 400gallons/yr x $4 = $1600/yr diesel cost

Yearly savings of $600 fuel cost. Time to recover ~$5000 premium for purchasing a TDI engine? 8.33 years.

Diesels are great but not for $5000 more ($5200 in the case of the Q7 I looked at).

I would agree, but I don't know anyone who drives 12,000 per year. I believe average mileage for the US is closer to 19,000. I drive about 30-34K per year so based on your math my payback is just north of 36 month’s

If we can get the Government to drop the Diesel TAX and or re-instate the diesel tax credit (up to $3,400 from FY2010) that will further close the gap in payback

National average is 15k/yr which is why EPA "estimated yearly fuel" costs reflect this standard. Used car prices are affected by mileage over 15k/yr and considered "high mileage" again because 15k is the standard. Until recently it was 12k/yr.

Even at 15k vs 12k, thats only another $100 fuel savings/yr. So it would take 7yrs.

You (and everyone you know) are clearly an exception. ;)

My wife has a Q7 -- pretty amazing to get 28 MPG (US) on the highway in a car that weighs 5,500lbs!

I have heard that the new A6 (expected in the fall) will have a diesel. I was tempted to wait for it, but then I drove an A7 and went with the TFSI instead. No regrets!

Do you have your A7 yet?

I havent seen any pics yet of a 20" sport pkg, only cars with the 20" wheels (standard suspension).

I have an Oolong Prestige w/ 20" sport pkg on order.

honestly, i thought the mpg numbers were the same. if they aren't that much more impressive, then screw it.

thanks for the info.
