I am told that I need a $600 part to hook up a four prong wiring harness. Any way around this?

Welcome jjjberg, what MY is your Q7?
Is your Q7 pre-wired for tow hitch?
Do you already have the Audi 7 pin connector?
If so then all you need is this adaptor

This version may be even better

If you want electric trailer brakes then perhaps they are referring to the Trailer control module and Trailer harness (part numbers via Q7 spreadsheet if you need them) and you still need a controller like Tekonsha Prodigy P3.

Any more info you can give may help.

This one is considerably cheaper. Doesn't have the test beep, but is that really needed?

A small utility trailer. Today Audi in Marin County says it will be $600 for the equiptment to wire a harness for a trailer and about 5 Hrs labor total cost to get lights to a small utility trailer $1700.00...Really!

So you do not have the factory installed trailer hitch? If you do have the factory hitch, there is a covered electrical box to the left of the hitch. It requires a socket plug and adapter - cost less than $50.

Let us know what you have on the car right now.

There was not a hitch on the car. I'm starting from scratch.
I did call a place that installs trailer hitches and they said they have a way around this issue of the $600 box and 5hrs install time. they tap into the wires and use a seperate power source. This guy says with the low voltage LED lights this is the answer. Will I regret this, is my MMI system vunerable.

We recently purchased a used 2007 Q7 which has the factory hitch. To the left of the receiver is a wiring harness with an odd 7 pin connector which seems to be for an RV (Pollak 11-933). The 7 to 4 adapter shown below in this thread won't work because the 7 pin end doesn't match what I have. Here is a pic - any ideas as to how I can adapt this sterange 7 pin to a 4 pin? Any suggestions would be appreciated:

No pic is visible; and a pic would be most helpful in trying to help you.
