So... this car has been out 2+ years and we only have roughly 15ish people who have visited the dragstrip and reported their times... In an effort to raise our sample size and get some more data I am going to put aside $250-$300 to the first 10 people who have not been to the strip and decide to go, I will pay their admission...

Requirements:
1/4 mile pass, no 1/8 mile #'s...
Timeslips at a minimum and prefer videos of runs...
Post of description of car, mods to car, track, conditions at track, and any other relevant information

How it will work:
Once the post is made send me a PM with the race fees and I will send you a check... I'll keep a running total on this post...

For the folks who have never been to the strip... bring a helmut and wear long pants and long sleeve shirt... get there early and watch a few people run so you know how to stage, where the track ends, etc. don't worry about reaction time just try to run the best ET you can... Oh and most importantly have fun on me!

This is not a scam and I will pay out the stated amount which can and will be verified by members of the forum who participate... Give it a try you may actually like it!

Paid out $'s - $60

I certainally can afford the entrance fee, so money for drag fees is not an issue for me. I do not have my APR chip yet (still waiting for EMCS). I appreciate you offering drag fees, but that is not holding me up. I will need to work on my 60' first. I do have a Gtech RR which I used before on my B5 S4 to work on my 60' and 1/4's.

Bruce, I understand... I am not trying to insult anyone by offering to pay so I hope you didn't take it that way... Just trying to get more results... Again, hope you understand... later Ron

Ron-

If I can get some drag data for you, I will. I will need my APR chip (or equivalent) first though. I really think the road course is more fun though, but that is only my opinion. :)

I don't know what's more amazing:

primetime's offer in an effort to get more excitement going in the community about testing the car or people STILL making excuses to not go to the dragstrip even when someone tries to PAY them to go. Absolutely incredible on all counts. Epic win vs. Epic fail.

Primetime - way to go. You are truly special!

How would you know? You stated you have never been to the drag strip and yet you say the road course is more enjoyable?

You don't have to go Bruce, you do realize that right? Prime is just making a nice offer to generate more interest and more data for this type of car. BTW, it would be good to get a nice baseline run without any tune first so you can see the before and after for your investment.

IMO.

Cheers

Huh, not sure why he can't think (different than know) that the road course is more fun than the drag strip without going to the drag strip?

I haven't been to either yet and I personally also think that a road course would be more fun... am I not allowed to think that either? =)

Anyway, I also think it's awesome that prime is offering to cover costs. I'm planning to hit the drag strip in July if I can get a helmet but don't need prime's $$, though it is a very nice gesture!

You can certainly think what ever you wish. I just won't listen to you being you haven't actually experienced. NO doubt that a road course is more involved and quite fun. But doing some straight line runs is fun too. Heck I know you all have participated in the stop light grand prix from time to time and I'd be hard pressed to believe you didn't think that was fun.

But either way, yes you are absolutely entitled to your opinion. I'd just rather folks speak from true experience rather than assumption.

I generally like to form my 'opinion' once I've tried something...although there are certainly exceptions.

I have never blown a guy, but I 'think' I would prefer not to :D

I just think it's funny that people STILL go out of their way to not go or to have an excuse to not go. Not having your tune is a terrible reason. People dyno/log their cars before/after mods all the time. Going to the strip is a great way to test your mods. The timselip tells a pretty good story about what is going on.

Also the first time I went to the strip, I had done a few track days in everything from Formula 2million cars (small race cars making 180hp) to the full lineup of Porsche road cars a few years ago (including turbos, 996 GT3, C4s the first Gayman etc.). I had never been to the dragstrip, but when I got my S4 I thought I'd give it a go.

First run, I lined up my S4 against an SRT8 Challenger. I had a camera in the car running, launched pretty well, barely held off the 420hp Challenger and ran 13.3. When I watched the video after I had a laugh because I kept repeating 'THAT WAS F***KING FUN!' on the video. It's really thrilling and if you can get some friends and go as a group, you'll like it even more.

Ok, went racing tonight. I have to say I'm pissed. I couldn't launch the damn thing! What do you guys rev it to before you take off?? I don't even want to post my time slips, it's not ever worth it :(

It's all good, was it your first time? Always tough to figure out a different car on how to launch.

It was my first time in this car. I've been racing for over 10 years though. This car is just giving me a hard time. Test n Tune this weekend for me! I need to practice. I'm really discouraged.

method 1

all traction systems off
clutch held just below the engagement point
hold RPMs at 3400
when you're ready to go, off the clutch and on the gas at the same instant, full rocket

method 2

all traction systems off
clutch held just below the engagement point
hold RPMs at 3400
when you're ready to go, slowly let out the clutch until you feel it just start to grab and then replace clutch with gas quickly. Don't delay

These are most popular in the S4 scene (over the past 10 years) . Some of us have many dozens of launches on stock clutch with these techniques. Some have a few hundred. Since B5/B6/B7/B8 all have a similar combination of heft, AWD and power, I see no reason it won't be effective.

Road and Track ran 12.9 at an unofficial test location (not a dragstrip...not even close) and to do so they dropped the clutch from 4000 RPMs I believe. Maybe even 4500? That's a press demonstrator car though that they don't give a **** about.

Thanks Sakimano. I will try that next time. Maybe I just wasn't reving high enough. I will be going to a test n tune in the next week, so I will just practice a lot.

Here are some details of my night.

5 runs and the best came on the last run of course as the temps were dropping. I can't believe how heavy this car is and still manages some respectible times at my altitude.

A few facts:
Bandimere Speedway (Denver CO) phsical altitude 5800'
Temp: 79F
Baro: 29.66
Humidity: 21%
DA: A whopping 8772' above sea level!!!

Some might see this as a damn slow run but at this altitude we get killed so I'm actually shocked. I weighed the car with me in and 3/8 of a tank of fuel and it came to 4160lbs. (91 octane run)

With a bit cooler temp and a less kick in the ass DA I can get this car to run in the 13's stock.

I have no modifications.

Slip (I'm car 281):

In august I'll get you some times from a non DSG non SD manual transmission car with an experienced driver (me). At this rate, the offer will still be open lol.

We should do a Seattle GTG and get to a dragstrip. There's enough variation between cars I feel to get some pretty good data

Agree the road course is great did that last week for fathers day. Anyway the drag strip at Cayuga was closed at that time as it was used by professionals. not much interest in the drag but if it were open I would have done it. I wouldn't go out of my way to do it however if and when I do the APR thing I most likely will get her done for comparison purposes.
