View Full Version : What exactly is Leatherette made of? Albert 11-28-1998, 12:32 AM JIM H. 11-28-1998, 03:16 AM John 11-28-1998, 06:24 AM Sorry, but leatherette is NOT vinyl. It is a complex copolymer which is light-years away from vinyl, and considerably more expensive.
If leatherette were vinyl, it would most certainly crack and break at low temperatures, and would lose virtually all of its strength when the cabin temperature rises to levels typical of summer conditions.
Vinyl is a thermoplastic--soft and weak when temperatures go up, and brittle when they go down.
It isn't Naugahyde, either. That is a proprietary product which in any case is an old, inferior pseudo-leather which I doubt has ever been used by a car manufacturer.
Leatherette in Audis is a quality upholstery product which is probably more durable and serviceable than leather. Whether you like it or not is a personal choice. (I prefer cloth--more comfortable in hot or cold, and actually very durable in Audis) |
