My Mechanic says he can get the filter used for my '08 and use Mobil synthetic oil, but he wants me to check to see what's required for warranty purposes. Is there a certain oil/filter I need to get? Do I have to get these things from Audi, or can I go to my local Autozone? Thanks

I got everything I needed at Walmart. ;-)

Except for that stinking drain tube, which I didn't get and made a nasty mess of my driveway.

I don't have to worry about a drian tube since my mechanic will be doing the oil change. I just didn't know if I needed a special brand filter and oil to keep within Audi's warranty guidelines. I didn't want to get something generic, have an issue, then be told they won't fix it because I used the wrong materials

Use full synthetic - Castrol 5W-40 or Mobil 1 0W-40 - both are VW approved. You can get the filter at Auto Zone or Advanced Auto. I saw a special for 5 qts Castrol Synthetic including a filter at Advanced Auto for abt $28.

Ok. I'll check out my local Auto Zone. I don't think we have any Advanced Auto locations around here, but I will look online. Thanks

The worst of winter is almost over. Is it ok to run with 0w40 in the spring?

That's a great question, and others should feel free to correct me if I'm off base but I believe 0w40 is less viscous so it is better for colder temps than 5w40. So in the warmer weather the 0w40 will become even thinner which is not ideal.

If your winters are not too harsh you should be fine with a 5w40 all year round.

I believe you're right. The 0w40 is lighter then 5/10w40 making it better for cold weather.

Nah. Not too harsh. NJ winter. Some colder days, but mostly 20's and 30's for about 2 months give or take 10 degrees. People just like to complain through the cold days which makes it seem longer. Get over it and move to FL already! Geez! It is winter afterall.....

When it comes to the normal operating temperatures of the engine, the 0W-40 and 5W-40 are the same, when it comes to the 40 weight. It's the lower number, 0W vs. 5W, where the 0W will, in theory anyway, pour at a lower temperature better than a 5W will.

My mechanic is in Millstone NJ on the corner of River Road and Amwell Rd. 1008 Amwell Rd, Millstone NJ 08844. 908-359-1331. If you call, ask for Joe and tell him Tracie told you about him. It's between Hillsborough and Somerset. It's at a Getty gas station.

Np. Where are you located? I'm not sure where I should buy the oil/filter from. I have a local Auto Zone near by and there's a Car Parts and Hapi Auto on my way to my Mom's. I think there's a Pep Boys around here too. Where do you plan on buying the oil and filter from? I will probably get Castrol, but I didn't know if it matters what filter I use.

I'm at Bridgewater...i had always taken my car to dealership to do oil change until now because the warranty has expired. I found a body shop that is audi/VW certified...since it's closer to my work place so I might try to have them do it for me...but I still want to buy my own oil since i don't know what kind they use...by the way, how much does your mechanic charge for oil change?

I found Mobil1 0w-40 at autozone but they didn't have the mobil1 oil filter, so I couldn't get the special deal...now this week, it's for castrol oil + fram oil filter...

has anyone used Fram Tough Guard Oil Filter before? If so, what's your review on it?

Ok, so you're pretty close then. If you take Finderne Ave straight into Millstone......I'm not sure how much he charges. I just called and left a message to see if he could take the car on Friday, so I will ask when I hear back from him. I have an Autozone right by me, so I'll go check them out. I'll likely get 5W-40. I assume the Fram filter is acceptable for warranty purposes? I don't have Audi Care on the '08, so when they told me it was $150 to do an oil change and tire rotation, I felt that was insane.

My husband went to AutoZone tonight and bought 5-1 Qt 5W-40 Castrol full synthetic for $7.99 ea. Then the Fram filter (I think it was just a regular filter) which was $12.99. The girl that took care of him had credited the $12.99 for the filter and just charged him $6.99 instead (I think she was just being nice because it wasn't on sale) and then they gave him a discount for $18.95 towards the oil. Subtotal $27.99 plus tax=$29.95 for oil and filter :)

My mechanic is charging me $12 to change the oil and of course I supplied the oil and filter. Normally it's $38 if he supplies the oil/filter. But I don't know if that's a full synthetic oil change or a regular oil change. I am also having him rotate the tires and check the brake pads for wear.

There were a few more things in the manual that were mentioned that get checked at the 25k service, but it was stuff we can check ourselves. Like windshield wipers, brake fluid level and check washer fluid.

He cares enough to put our car in the garage over night ;)

$12 to change the oil? that's cheap...i just called mine and they are charging $35. But they said they have a list of stuff to check. Perhaps I will alternate between the two shops.

I also went to autozone and got the $27.99 deal...however they don't have the oil filter for my car so i got it for another car. I wasn't going to use the Fram oil filter because I found the Mann filter on amazon and it's not too expensive. So i'll use that instead.

Stay away from Fram oil filters. You get exactly what you pay for w/them. A CHEAP FILTER.

If you're going to spend good money for synthetic oil, do likewise for an oil filter, like OEM (Audi), Mobil 1, NAPA, WIX, Purolator, but stay the heck away from Frams.

Reason, Frams are cheaply made, cut one open or look it up on the net, and have a quality issue, in that they have been known to totally disintegrate in engines. I know two (2) different mechanics who have seen it happen, where the filter core has disintegrated.

I've been going to him forever, so I don't know if he is giving me a break. I am having him rotate the tires and check the brake pads too. But that's about it. I can check fluids myslef. I am just annoyed that Audi charges $150.00 to do a simple oil change and tire rotation, plus to 'check' stuff. I'm sure if my mechanic sees any unusual wear, he will let me know. But he won't charge me an arm and a leg......
