2.0T is in the order guide for Audi dealers and coming for the '12 A6.

CVT form only, though. Not sure it's going to be a huge seller, but I wonder what the hp is and how it'll actually drive with a 4 banger.

If there put the TTS specs in there with !265hp / 260 torque, that would be a mighty fine motor. But no Quattro is a deal breaker for me.

I would doubt it will get the same 265hp as the TTS, in fact I haven't read anywhere that the 2.0T is getting more than the 211hp it already has. That being said I have read that BMW are about to introduce a new list of 2.0T engines to replace their aging 6 cylinder inline range that does produce a healthy 245hp all the way down to the same 211hp, so I don't think Audi will wait to long before upping it's output to match or hopefully excess this figure in the appropriate models and hopefully by the time the 2.0T A6 is introduced it too will produce around the 250hp mark.

Don't hold your breath for much higher output from 2.0T in either A4/5/6. It would be too close to 3.0 tfsi output. I can see that A4/5 could see it jumping to approx 230hp max and that's it, since the next model is S4/5 at 333hp. A6 will keep it simple with 2.0t at 211hp as it's now or even lower, along with more mature and sound V6 2.8 for such class.
Also note, BMW will introduce 245hp option only for X1 as there would be no higher engine option than that. 5er will have lower specced version of 210hp which will replace 523's 3.0 I6, and keep enough of a cushion till 528 and 535.

The x1 might be the only one available with this new engine in that version but it's customary for BMW to offer the same engine spec across all models so I am suggesting that the 5 series will receive two versions of this new 2.0T, one with 210hp and the other with 245hp, probably badged 530i to compliment the 3.0T 535i with it's 306hp that I reckon will also get a kick in power. Would it not be smart for Audi to offer something similar, drop the 2.8L as it's neither powerful or that economical and replace it with the 2.0T 210hp version that's already on sales else where, not everyone wants a big capacity engine and in some countries taxes are determined by capacity anyway. The 2.8L is an engine that doesn't make sense any more, it's a relic, would it not be smarter to upping the power of the 3.0T to the same 333hp of the S4 which would allow a more powerful 2.0T to fill the void, only not with the same as BMW but a more powerful 2.0T.

Audi should be leading, not following BMW's decisions and if they want to regarding as the performance brand then they also need to offer the most performance as well which can't be achieve from less power.

I must agree that Audi have to lead not follow, but it's also wise to take already proven path of success of highly rated competitor, more so when the product portfolio is constantly growing and expanding. The least you need is to take any risk whilst doing so.
A6 C7 has been already confirmed with 300ps world wide and 310hp in US, so no way they would increase the power to 333ps (and that would also collide with the S4, a sport model, which they wouldn't do!). Having one model at ~250ps and other at 300ps doesn't cut it these days when everybody wants considerable ''jump'' in power from one model to another...
We will see...

Are you then suggesting that BMW won't offer both versions of it's 2.0T in the 3 and 5 series, that I would find hard to believe since the x1 is already getting the 245hp version. So let's say that BMW do indeed offer both versions of the 2.0T in these two models, that would mean they would have a 210hp, a 245hp and a 306hp which is the same or similar to what I am suggesting Audi need to do, forget about increasing the 3.0T this could easily happen in 3 years time with the face-lift but it's now that these fuel efficient engines are needed and it's now that Audi must act.

Another thing worth considering, as you commented yourself earlier, the 2.8L is a more premium class of engine and that is solely down to the cylinder count, so by offering a 245-250hp version in a rougher sounding 4 cylinder where as the 300hp is a more cultured 6 cylinder, surely that keeps a clear line between each version regardless of overall performance and is an important point that has to be taken into account when purchase a car. It's not like Audi hasn't done something like this in the past, the TT has ran in the past a 2.0T with 200hp, a 3.2L with 250hp and a TTS again with a 2.0T with 265hp.

Audi will have to move away from the 2.8L of this I am almost certain simply because it's competitors are looking towards more efficient engine alternatives, why else would BMW drop it's silky smooth inline 6 for a rougher 4 cylinder turbo. The world is changing and if you sit still too long you get left behind.

Yes, I believe BMW is phasing out lower speced n/a 3.0 I6 with 204ps and replacing it with lower speced 2.0t I4, but keeping higher output 3.0 i6 for the moment as it can't keep up with 3.0t torque wise - so there will be a clear split...
Audi on the other hand, will have A6 2.0t hybrid at 245ps to slot in between - so no point in bringing regular 2.0t to that level! At least not for A6... A4/5 FL might have such jump but I guess slightly lower as I have said (230-240ps)! We will see it this year anyway since the model update for A4/5 is due!
I agree 2.8fsi is nothing to rave about but probably they did a research for C segment and that's what they came up offering for the time being as the lowest version of gasoline A6/7...

Did a search through google and came up with the following about what engines BMW are intending to introduce over the next couple of years.

A new 3 cylinder 1500cc turbo engine offering up 2 tune levels, level 1 (158hp - 233Nm) and level 2 (184hp - 263Nm)

A new 4 cylinder 2000cc turbo engine offering up 2 tune levels, level 1 (211hp - 310Nm) and level 2 (245hp - 350Nm)

To compliment these there will be tweaks to the 3000cc 6 cylinder engine, again 2 levels of tune, level 1 (317hp - 465Nm) and level 2 (368hp - 525Nm), and replacing to 4400cc 8 cylinder engine with a slightly small 4000cc 8 cylinder putting out either (422hp - 620) and (490 - 700Nm).

Summary:

3 cyl - 1.5L - (158/233) & (184/263)
4 cyl - 2.0L - (211/310) & (245/365)
6 cyl - 3.0L - (317/465) & (368/525)
8 cyl - 4.0L - (422/620) & (490/700)

Audi need to match or preferable better these.

Lots of dealers haven't seen a cvt a6 on the lot in years & it's all quattro.

My guess is that the 3.2 motor is dead & audi needs to find a replacement. So few cvt a6s are even sold that it probably doesn't matter much.

The 2.0 makes perfect sense. Lighter weight than a v6 & quattro is lighter anyway.

Even in the current a4, the 2.0 is already putting too much torque through the front wheels and you can spin the front wheels but not even pressing 1/2 way on the gas.

The 2.0t q5 is already selling out & many people prefer it to the 3.2. So I hate to underestimate the appeal of the 2.0t.
