I just bought a D4 yesterday and i am very upset, as i found out that it has keyless go, but no keyless entry. It's a 4.2 TDI with a lot of gadgets.
This is outrageous. My 2004 A8L has both kg & ke, and this 100.000 euro new car doesn't.
The strange thing is that it has the keyless entry buttons on the door handles, but they appear to be fake, as they don't "click" when pushed.
Is this possible? I mean to have keyless go without keyless entry?
If so, can it be retrofitted?
Many thanks.

Unfortunately looks like you're right, at least based on A8 specs from Audi of America website (assume you're in Europe). Per AoA, keyless start/stop is standard on both A8 and A8L models, while keyless entry is only standard on A8L - keyless entry is option (with convenience pkg) for A8 (NWB) models.
Here's the link:

I think you're missing something. Do you have the Convenience Package? Keyless entry works fine with mine. Just touch the handle with the key in a pocket and the doors unlock, even with winter gloves on... Don't have to touch the "buttons", just light grasp the handle.
If you have the Convenience Package, it should work. I hope it's something simple.

I'm guessing he doesn't have the convenience pkg as keyless start/stop is standard on both A8 and A8L models, but keyless entry is optional on NWB models...see my post above yours.

Well, i'm not sure if i have this package. Is there a way to check? Perhaps a vin decoder or so?
If i don't have it, any ideea if i can retrofit keyless entry?
However, i find it strange that if there is no keyless entry, why are the buttons on the exterior door handles? I owned both a phaeton with and without keyless entry, and the one without didn't have the buttons on the door handle.
Also my girlfriend has an a8 without keyless entry (2004), and she doesn't have the buttons either.
Thanks.

Based on U.S. specs, the convenience pkg also would include the following:
The A8 Convenience Package includes many thoughtful features to make your driving experience effortless. The power trunk feature allows you to open and close the trunk with the push of a button while the Audi parking system plus with rearview camera integrates a camera for real-time viewing of the parking area. This safety-enhancing system also offers front and rear ultrasonic parking sensors that measure the distance to the nearest object and audibly warn you when the distance becomes unsafe. The package also offers keyless entry, allowing you to lock or unlock and start your vehicle without removing the key from a pocket or purse
Do you have these other features?
You have the A8, not A8L, right?

I'm guessing here that U.S. spec packages are not relevant in this situation---he has a 4.2 TDI, so undoubtedly a European spec car, where options/packages are very different from U.S. spec cars.

That would be one of the most absurd omissions ever.
You'd have to get the keyfob out of your pocket or purse to click the car open, ...but fortunately you've have the added convenience of tucking the keyfob away and starting the car with a click of the button.
And once you've arrived at your destination, you can stop the car without the keyfob, but you'd have to take it out again to lock it or else remember to lock all door from the inside button, especially if you needed something from the trunk/boot.

That is exactly what i was thinking. It is absurd. It doesn't make any sense if you ask me. :-)
Regarding the specs, yes, i have an european version, produced in Austria.
I have the following:
- MMI Plus, with bluetooth and car phone, AMI, 6 DVD Changer, 2 SD slots, and 1 extra SIM slot, + touch control
- Night vision
- Keyless go
- SDS, TPMS, Side Assyst, Power trunk, 4 zone climate control, heated/ventilated/massage front seats, heated rear seats, memory front seats,
- 3 spokes steering wheel (electrical), electronic rear shades, adaptive lights (bi-xenon), ambient light package,
- refrigerated glove box
- adaptive cruise control
- advances parking sensor (front and rear) + rear view camera
- garage door opener
- solar sunroof
- rain & light sensor
- pre-sense
I must repeat, what intrigues me the most is that i have the keyless entry buttons designed on the door handles but they don't work.

With all of your features/options, difficult indeed to believe you don't have touch lock/unlock feature. Pardon if you have already done this but can you 'drill down' the systems options in the MMI to activate it?
If it's any consolation, I am having my pass door touch button replaced - will not lock on consistent basis. Just another bug to be corrected for 'Derf's 2012.

I am not very familiar with the new mmi menu, but i have searched it over and over again for something related to keyless entry but didn't find anything.
I have ordered today a 2010 VCDS kit (original) as my old clone didn't cover the 2010 model, and i hope that i will find some problem with the keyless, as i don't want to retrofit the system. I will retrofit at some point, because it's very strange without it, but i would prefer to have it factory installed :D

For what it's worth, I just checked the Audi UK site and they also show keyless entry as being only on the higher ("Executive") trim level, but the base trim has only the keyless go.
Yes, it seems crazy, but apparently if you fail to order the right trim level or option package (regardless if you're in the U.S. or Europe), you can get stuck without keyless entry :(

Geez, I'd love to have that SIM slot so I could access Google Earth.

This is old news, but I thought I would offer DJ Lex something additional to worry about:

Yes, agreed. I was only suggesting that any references to specific U.S. package components would be meaningless to someone with a non-U.S. spec car, since the packages (and their contents) would likely differ. Having said that, yes, on the surface it is counter-intuitive to separate the keyless go and keyless entry...But considering the ability of techno-thieves to now use these keyless features against us, perhaps having the option to choose one keyless feature over the other might make sense for someone.

Hi
All I can say is "complain". Once you get through the red tape (my salesman did it in my case via the area sales manager), Audi can be extremely helpful and supportive.
No doubt that the next time I have an issue they will totally fail me, but they haven't yet. But as an organisation, they appear to listen. I would have thought the sales person would have explained all the differences between the SE and SE Exec etc etc, if not, blame him!

Nothing like a good old fashioned kill switch that cuts power to the electric fuel pump circuit.
