View Full Version : MMI freeze and then reboot

Today, after about 15 minutes of driving in our 2010 Q5 prem plus with Nav, the MMI froze (as did the smaller display). I was trying to change radio stations and nothing happened. I couldn't change to any other function either. I was also using the NAV and the smaller screen was stuck on 2.6 miles to next turn, and wouldn't move. After about 30 seconds the MMI turned off and then rebooted itself. As soon as it turned off, and essentially canceled the navigation, the smaller screen changed to my default setting of MPH (so I'm assuming it wasn't really frozen, it was just showing me the info that was frozen from the NAV). Once the MMI rebooted it was perfectly fine and I haven't had any more problems today.

Has anyone had any issues with this happening?

I have my 5k service next week so of course I'll mention it to them.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Has happened to me several times (and I've had the update). Just like any computer, sometimes it freezes and needs to reboot. The entire car is run by a computer after all.

So hopefully it's nothing major to worry about?

I have been disappointed with the MMI in general. Slow as molasses, especially when you first start the car. If I knew how bad it would be, I would have thought twice about buying the car in the first place.

Not at all slow "when you first start the car"...with the exception of the boot up time. It IS a computer. Mine's faster than my Garmin.

The MMI is just a bonus feature as far as I'm concerned. It takes about 15 seconds to boot up initially, as long as you leave it alone to finish, otherwise it takes longer. I've owned my Q5 since last August and now I know the MMI very well. It's not the most user friendly initially and the POI's are terrible, but once you get used to it, it's easier to navigate. There is so much to love about this car that the little pet peeves should not be a factor. Just MHO.

No I didn't buy a car depending on the MMI. But I don't expect driving a 50k car to be a major PITA. Having to wait 2 mins to change from radio to media is unacceptable. I wouldn't have to worry about it without the MMI, but that's the only option you have with this car.

That doesn't sound right at all. Mine changes nearly instantly from radio to iPod and back. DVDs play fine with no lag, and the nav is acceptably quick.

I know you're exaggerating when you say "2 mins" but if it's taking longer than 2 or 3 seconds to switch to radio or to Media, I would say that doesn't seem normal based on my experience. If you are using voice commands, try changing the option to the short voice responses - that way you don't have to wait for the annoying confirmation messages and the thing just does what you tell it to do without delay.

It's bad. After it boots up, it will not accept inputs (buttons) for the first minute or so. Just sits there doing nothing. Then it just lags. I'll hit the seat warmer button and the display just hangs there for 10-15 seconds. After about 10 minutes it speeds up but it is by no means fast at any time. Very annoying.

I would definitely bring it in for service. As others have noted, mine takes just a few seconds to boot up, and there is no lag when using it.

+1 - definitely NOT normal. Take it to the stealer and if they tell you it's fine, ask to play with another one to compare.
