Avant FWD 98.5 I have an intermittant squeal coming from the rear of the car while underway or at a stop. I noticed that if i accelerate hard it goes away. doesn't seem to matter if car is warm or cold, just happens from time to time, and naturally not while at the dealer. since it's FWD no strange U tank. The only things back there are the CD changer and the fuel pump i think. only have 8,500k. the car seems to surge a little at low speeds, which makes me think that all is not right with the fuel pump. any ideas.

IMHO, fuel pump noises are usually "tick...tick...tick..." noises. Or it use to be on my lovely british cars I had for a number of years. While it could be the fuel pump, my quess is that it is not. Just adding more fuel to the fire.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
I have had a squeek from the rear drivers side of the car, periodicaly, at a standstill or driving.... I have narowed it down to the pump in the gas tank that either pumps air into the tank to equalize the pressure... they are going to change the pump next week on my 48k service, I will post if it helped

I heard the same squeal. I can always hear it
during the cool down period. I think it is the
injector used for balancing the fuel level. By the
way, I have quattro with that strange inverted U
fuel tank.
