My 2007 S6 has 26k miles and I heard a slight squeal when I hit the brakes in a parking lot the other day. I'm sure it's time for new front pads. I called the dealer to schedule an appointment. Can someone give me a ballpark cost or what you have paid for front brake service - i.e. new pads and rotor work and/or new rotors? Is it even necessary to get new rotors at 26k miles? I drive mainly highway miles. The car is my daily driver. Never seen a track. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

I had all 4 pads and all 4 rotors replaced in my 05 4.2 for $1,186, plus tax. I live in New York so it may be on the high side.

If you heard a sqeal then it's most likely your rear pads. The rears have squealers that let you know that they're low, the fronts have a pad sensor that would give you a warning in your MFD. But who knows, S6s may be different.

I did my fronts pads time ago it was $120 with the dealer and i did it.at this time also was a brake light up on my dash because of the sensor on the pads,so probably the rears ones doesn't have sensor.
here you can see some pictures how change front pads. http://www.audiworld.com/tech/wheel59.shtml

Dealer quote was " $900 to $1100" I paid less than $250 for pads and did it myself. I turned the front rotors but left the rears as is. You do need Vag com to do the rears. Other wise it was an easy job.

Wow your dealer just wanted to rape you silly. I upgraded my entire braking system with performance pads and slotted/dimpled rotors for about $700 including labor. These dealers are just nuts with their prices.

How about my quote for front rotors and front pads: $168.00 for pads; $168 for rotors; $780 for labor. Total: $1,116.00 for JUST the front brakes and rotors. I told the service tech that I was born at night but not last night and told him to have a nice weekend. Perhaps he thought that the S on the S6 stood for "Stupid."

I honestly believe that the dealers figure if you can afford a $50K+ car, you won't blink at inflated service prices. Find a good indy shop that you trust, and your wallet won't be as thin.

Dealers of most brands are well know to screw customers on brake jobs. If cyou ca, find a good indy asnd stick with them.

Btwy, a squeal doesn't automatically mean you need new pads. Dirt or some slightly uneven wear can cause it too.

I shopped around for all the parts on line.Once I had everything a good friend of mine who is a very good mechanic installed everything.I know its not fair, but he got paid.

I ordered Rotoras/rotors for the front and standard OEm zimmermans for the rear.Akebono ceramics for the front with sensors. The rear Hawk brake pads.

360 for rotora 100 for zimmer,80 for akebonos and about 75 for hawks.I also installed new brake lines.Stainless steel they do the job and they look good.Stopping power has been good and low dust.

Total, excluding the break lines ,with labor $915.00.Shop around.Good luck!

Holy F$%$## ****. That's a lot! I just did my front - pads: Akebono for $90; rotors: OEM for $165. Shops charge for installing one rotor (caliper bracket bolt wouldn't budge): $25.

Total for front brakes: $90 + 165 + 25 = $280

How about my quote for front rotors and front pads: $168.00 for pads; $168 for rotors; $780 for labor. Total: $1,116.00 for JUST the front brakes and rotors. As you can see from all these post, going to Audi to have brakes replaced is nuts. Fronts you can DIY, rears should be done with somebody that has a VAG-COM tool. I went to an independant to have rear pads and rotors done for under $300. I made the mistake of having brakes done at Audi once with my A4. I learned my lesson...

26,000 miles seem a little early for brakes unless you do alot of stop and go driving. I would have them checked before assuming they need replacement.

I must be nuts because I have had all 4 pads replaced twice and the rotors once, all at the dealer. For me the convenience of the loaner car and having a currently trained Audi tech work on the car is worth the additonal price of the dealer.

That is too funny....

I too think the dealers charge way to much. This is my first german car and the parts are a little more than a japanese or american car. But no way should you pay 1,100 for a brake job. I bought a vag com and will do it myself.

To quote my dad "Only stupid people rob with guns in this country"

There is life on the other side of the river. I had heard the rumor but I did not know that it was true. ;)

there we go - NYC vs Jersey; which reminds me of when I was travelling to Secaucus every week for work. I would say that I was going to NY and would get reminded everytime by my other half that no, I was actually going to New Jersey - there is a difference. :)
