In Canada Land it's...

4 years 80000km powertrain... I think...
12 years rust "perforation"

4 years or 50000 miles in the US

In addition, it may be worthwhile to note that certain trim and mechanical adjustments (to items like the sunroof, etc.) are only warrantied for the first 12 months (and 12k miles IIRC from the letter I received from AofA).

if the car is crashed and i sell it to someone else will the warranty still be valid?

Yes. The warranty is attached to the car, not the owner.

Why would they do this when the competition is covering bumper to bumper for the entire duration of the warranty?

In the US there's also an 80,000 mile/8 year emissions warranty. This probably covers the carbon buildup on the valves that these engines will eventually have.

i seem to recall there also being something about a 12yr rust free guarentee... but that may only be on the B8 A5

4 years or 50000 miles in the US bumper to bumper, I know that for sure. I have all the warranty papers from AoA

because they can and people still buy their cars?

Is there an extended warranty you can buy for the A4?

Getting in an accident doesn't void the warranty. Certainly the accident damage won't be covered by the warranty, and any future problems that can be attributed to the accident will also not be covered. But the rest of the warranty remains in full effect, even if you sell the car.
