Take a look at the transmission case. If it is painted green with yellow trim, you have your answer.

Many cars have a distinctive roar when operating in reverse. In my Audi I don't hear any difference in going forward in 1st gear or in reverse. It is actually quite quiet. A workshop visit might be in order to investigate the source of the noise.

Had the shop check it out twice (when in for the rear-window defroster repair -- first time was diag, second replacement) result -- "everything is to spec".

What you hear in the recording is normal (my car does it too). The reason behind it is extra emissions control during cold start before the oxygen sensor and cat converter warm up. It almost always goes away approximately 30 secs after the car is started, you'll notice the idle drops a bit when it goes away too.

Possible you're hearing the turbo unit sucking air?

My B8 Avant has done this since day 1; perfectly normal for this engine.
