View Full Version : 3M PAINT PROTECTION FILM NYCTaxiMan 08-13-2009, 11:44 AM Is anyone using this to protect their car from dents/scratches? Does it work? 2010 Q5 w/Nav jc2298 08-13-2009, 12:19 PM It's funny I was just looking into it myself. I got a quote from these guys for $1800!!! on a Q5. (Ouch) http://www.detailingdynamics.com/filmporsche.html Full install around the car from front bumpers to the side sills. And I also found this site, http://tinyurl.com/nhvucc a lot cheaper but it's a do it yourself job. NYCTaxiMan 08-13-2009, 02:07 PM Thanks for the pricing. I couldn't get a price from anyone from my area. It looks easy on http://www.clearmask.com/installation_videos.php but I wouldn't chance it. As you can see I am from NYC - capital of dents and scratches. jc2298 08-13-2009, 03:03 PM I'm there with you. But these are what you need for dents and scratches in NYC!!! jc2298 08-13-2009, 03:05 PM I'm going to take a shot at film protections myself once my Q5 gets here, which won't be until the end of October. Certainly can't afford to pay the shop to intall it. There are lots of dealers that offer them, but they might not be the 3M films, which has a special flexible clear coat finish on them. They won't yellow or fade as long you take good care of it. Can last for a good five years or longer. It's one of those thing you have to do when the car is spanking new. MCNIERNEYC 08-13-2009, 09:26 PM I had the film on my last car (Range Rover Sport), which I had for 3+ years. Excellent for preventing stone chips and other bug splatter. Had it put on my Q5 as well. I live in the Northwest where they use gravel instead of sand when it gets snowy/icy, so the film is excellent protection. bayridgeguy 08-14-2009, 03:19 AM I'm there with you. But these are what you need for dents and scratches in NYC!!! I street park my car in Brooklyn, NY. When I leave the car parked, i just fold out the bumper badge from my trunk. It won't protect from someone cornering the car but most of the time it is idiots that will just bump straight into your back trying to park - so im covered there. As far as the front goes, i feel like a 100$ replacement of the plastic piece on which the license plate holder sits, is not worth installing a bra like you have on the picture. Do you drive with those on? They look kind of massive to store in your trunk... bayridgeguy 08-14-2009, 03:23 AM I also think that 3M won't protect from bumper scratches. It will probably just end up tearing the film. I def. agree that it would be easier to clean off bird poop, tree sap and bugs from the 3M film. I guess one could apply a nice coat of wax every now and then.(that's what i do). jc2298 08-14-2009, 03:58 AM Had it put on my Q5 as well. I live in the Northwest where they use gravel instead of sand when it gets snowy/icy, so the film is excellent protection. How much did that cost? jc2298 08-14-2009, 04:16 AM Do you drive with those on? They look kind of massive to store in your trunk... I don't have them yet but I'm planning of getting them for my new Q5. You're not suppose to drive with them on. They're advertised for garage parking. The back piece has a security strap like all those bumper guards you now see in the streets but the front ones don't. It does look quite bulky to store. bayridgeguy 08-14-2009, 04:25 AM http://www.bumperblocker.com/products_bumper_protection_guards.html I can see them being very effective. But it is kind of pricey.... and also an easy steal for any thief... bayridgeguy 08-14-2009, 04:34 AM I wonder what the metal guard protector would look like on a Q5. The Q is probably too new to see any samples out there... but i imagine that most of them are probably pretty ugly :( edwyun 08-14-2009, 08:39 AM I only installed the 3M film for inside the doorhandle wells. They usually will get scratched by fingers, nails, keys, etc., a lot more than anything else. YMMV. It's not that hard to DIY but takes patience to get the airbubbles out. edwyun 08-14-2009, 08:39 AM I'm there with you. But these are what you need for dents and scratches in NYC!!! Yup, definitely need them for parking in NYC parking garages. Q5hopeful 08-14-2009, 08:54 AM I had the film on my last car (Range Rover Sport) Had it put on my Q5 as well. Oh, is that CAD? I'm looking for a place to apply protection to the front bumper of my Q5 in addition to the hood, fenders and mirrors. I am unsure if it's better to try to find a place that uses computer precut film or one that cuts each piece by hand as the bumper piece seems fairly complex. Anyone have thoughts on this? BTW I'm in Denver, in case anyone has a recommendation. noservice 08-16-2009, 07:42 AM Had the front hood, bumper and side mirrors installed. $650 jnl2u 08-16-2009, 12:15 PM I work for 3M and know this product very well. I would not encourage you to do it yourself unless you have installed films in the past (window tint, wrap film, etc.). Make sure you get a quote for Scotchgard Paint Protection Film. It has a clear coat and can be maintained the same way as the rest of the exterior. Check out www.3m.com/carbuyers to find applicators in your area. It is a very durable film and will stop abrasions and scratches, but not dents.
