Default Timing Belt Job, can a friend handle the job?

Just purchased a 95 S6 and want to do the t-belt. My mechanic friend who im pretty sure is capable of doing the job and needs the money has volunteered his services. He has done t-belts on older audi vehichles but no s-cars. My question is how badly can he screw up the car? If its unlikely a trained mechanic would do any damage i would love to just give him the cash rather than a shop. let me know what u think, thanks!

It is a pretty straight forward job, you just need the right tools (or the ability to improvise them).

What damage can he do? Well, these are interference motors...

Default You should make sure he begs, borrows, or fabricates a crank pulley locking tool...

The SJM site write up is excellent, but it doesn't mention that several listers have had the lower cam drive pulley (which is on the crank) fail catastrophically after timing belt jobs that were done with impact tools and no locking tool. The lower cam gear is powdered metal, and it doesn't like impact tools

I'd say the most important tools are:

1. instructions
2. a big breaker bar
3. cam seal removal tool
4. crank lock tool

I when i did my TB I had only done 1 other TB in my life...13 years ago on my 1987 honda accord when i was 18. Needless to say i was nervous and rusty but I got it on the first try.

just take your time and refer back to this site if he has any concerns.

triple check all your marks before you button everything up and fire it up.
